Toto Wolff defends new Formula 1 era despite criticism: “Pure racing on track”. Toto Wolff defends the new Formula 1 regulations after the Japanese Grand Prix.

Despite the wave of criticism surrounding the new Formula 1 regulations — including concerns raised by several drivers, even from within Mercedes — there are still prominent figures in the paddock who fully embrace this new technical era. Among them is Toto Wolff, who not only celebrated his team’s three consecutive victories at the start of the season, but also expressed strong enthusiasm for the on-track action witnessed during the Japanese Grand Prix.

Speaking to DAZN Spain, the Austrian team principal stated: “This is pure racing. It’s really exciting. The fans can clearly see when a driver is recharging and when he is pushing to attack.”

However, these comments contrast sharply with the stance of Max Verstappen, who has been highly critical of the new rules. The Dutch driver has even gone as far as suggesting he could consider stepping away from the sport if the situation does not improve in the coming months.

Responding directly to Max Verstappen’s remarks, Toto Wolff added in an interview with Sky Germany: “Formula 1 is changing and it’s very exciting. We are witnessing a new style of racing, increasingly in the hands of the drivers. But perhaps Max and others preferred last year’s rules, when here in Suzuka we didn’t see any overtaking.”

Toto Wolff therefore views the 2026 regulations as a massive success for fan engagement and racing quality. Based on the content of the Japanese GP, the Mercedes boss believes that putting more tactical decisions into the drivers’ hands is the right move for the future of the sport, regardless of the pushback from the Red Bull garage.
