In recent hours, several photos showing Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff together have set social media ablaze and fueled speculation among fans of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. However, there is one major issue: the images in question are not genuine.
It only took the sight of two yachts moored next to each other to ignite excitement among the Formula 1 fanbase. Reports suggested that both Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion driving for Red Bull Racing, and Mercedes Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff were vacationing in Sardinia at the same time. This overlap quickly led fans of the Silver Arrows to fantasize about a sensational driver transfer — the possible announcement of an agreement between Mercedes and Verstappen.
The excitement intensified further when certain photos began circulating rapidly online, especially on social media platforms. These images appeared to show the Dutch racing superstar boarding his private jet, followed closely by Toto Wolff and their respective entourages. A handful of seemingly innocent pictures was all it took to reignite the F1 driver market speculation. For Mercedes supporters, this felt like the beginning of a new era, with many already envisioning an official statement announcing what could be the most groundbreaking signing of the decade.
But there is a problem
There’s a catch — and it’s quite straightforward. The photos are fake. Or more precisely, they are not current and have nothing to do with the supposed vacation in Sardinia that has been circulating in rumors these days. The images showing Toto Wolff boarding a jet actually date back to 2022. They were taken after the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, where Wolff was seen leaving the paddock following the race weekend.
In short, a few old photos combined with clever use of artificial intelligence tools were enough to send the Formula 1 rumor mill into overdrive. It’s a perfect example of how quickly speculation can spiral out of control in the digital age.
That said, it is important to clarify that while the photos are misleading, the rumors surrounding Max Verstappen and his potential future with Mercedes are not entirely unfounded. Contacts between the three-time World Champion and the Brackley-based team are real and ongoing, even if nothing official has yet been confirmed. The situation remains fluid, and for now, fans will have to wait patiently to see whether these whispers materialize into a historic F1 move.
