Thierry Boutsen believes George Russell will recover from the difficult period that has seen Andrea Kimi Antonelli increasingly take control of the battle inside Mercedes, but the three-time Formula 1 race winner has also sent a warning to the Italian: sooner or later, every driver experiences the kind of difficult cycle Russell is going through now.
Italian Formula 1 fans naturally have plenty of reason to celebrate with Andrea Kimi Antonelli leading the World Championship. Some would undoubtedly have preferred to see Ferrari fighting for the title, but with Mercedes emerging as the favourite heading into the 2026 season, the prospect of an Italian driver challenging for the championship has given the country another powerful reason to follow the fight at the front.
George Russell struggles as Kimi Antonelli takes control at Mercedes
The situation inside Mercedes has changed significantly since the beginning of the campaign. George Russell started the year as one of the leading favourites, but Andrea Kimi Antonelli has gradually established himself as the stronger force within the team and now sits at the top of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.
For George Russell, that reversal has created an increasingly difficult situation. The British driver had begun the season with expectations of leading Mercedes’ title challenge, only to see his younger team-mate gain confidence, momentum and results as the campaign progressed.
The changing dynamic has inevitably raised questions over how Russell is handling the pressure, particularly as Antonelli continues to strengthen his position within Mercedes.
Thierry Boutsen backs George Russell to recover
Thierry Boutsen, who raced in Formula 1 between 1983 and 1993 for Arrows, Benetton, Williams, Ligier and Jordan and claimed three Grand Prix victories, believes Russell’s current difficulties are part of a cycle many drivers experience during their careers.
Speaking to Formula 1’s official website, Thierry Boutsen said: “I’m sure George will recover. As soon as he gets another opportunity, he’ll be back.”
The former Williams driver believes fluctuations in confidence and performance are an unavoidable part of competing at the highest level.
“During a career, it’s normal to go through these kinds of cycles. Those moments when you question everything, with the related psychological difficulties,” Thierry Boutsen explained.
Russell’s position has become one of the major themes of Mercedes’ season as he attempts to respond to the emergence of Antonelli, with the changing hierarchy also raising questions over how George Russell’s role at Mercedes could evolve if the Italian continues to establish himself at the front.
Boutsen warns Kimi Antonelli that his difficult period will come too
Boutsen’s message was not aimed solely at George Russell. He also warned Andrea Kimi Antonelli against assuming that his current success means the difficult periods of an Formula 1 career will pass him by.
“I’m sure Andrea Kimi Antonelli will face the same problems. Maybe not now, perhaps next year or in two years.”
The message is essentially a reminder to Russell not to give up, but also a warning to Antonelli not to take his current position for granted or begin to see himself as an established star before his time.
Formula 1 careers move through different phases. Confidence, machinery and results can all change, sometimes very quickly. For Russell, the challenge is to learn from his current difficulties and rediscover the circumstances that previously allowed him to perform at his best.
For Antonelli, the lesson is different but equally important. His remarkable rise has put him in an extraordinary position, but Boutsen believes the setbacks that currently define Russell’s season will eventually arrive for him as well. How both Mercedes drivers respond when the momentum changes could ultimately prove just as important as their outright speed.
