A frightening incident occurred during FP2 of the Japanese GP at Suzuka for Jack Doohan. The Australian Alpine driver went off track at Turn 1, losing control of his car and crashing into the barriers. The speed at which the rookie from Enstone went off is shocking: as highlighted by data from the second free practice session at the Suzuka circuit, Jack Doohan had just reached a top speed of 331 km/h when his A525 spun out, later impacting – fortunately sideways – against the tire barriers. The session was immediately halted with a red flag to allow for Jack Doohan’s rescue.
Driver Exits the Car on His Own
Fortunately, the second-generation driver got out of the car on his own two feet, though it took him a few minutes to exit the vehicle after telling his team via radio that he was fine. He appeared dazed from the impact and limped as he got out, and was taken to the circuit’s medical center for further checks. The crash was so intense that it even scared the drivers behind him. Isack Hadjar, who saw the incident in the distance, immediately called for the red flag, which was quickly waved.
Initially, it was thought that the cause of the off-track moment could be related to the bumps in that section of the track, as sparks were seen coming from the rear of Jack Doohan’s car just before the loss of control. The driver asked over the radio what had happened, surprised by the sudden loss of control. The most likely theory, although not officially confirmed, is that the DRS remained open longer than it should have, even after the driver had entered the corner, causing the sudden loss of grip.
