Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari
It was the move that turned negotiations into unprecedented chaos, shaking up the driver market for the 2025 Formula One season. Inevitably, even today, several months after those fateful early days of February, people are still commenting on Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes after 12 years to join Ferrari. In an interview with RacingNews365, Sir Jackie Stewart also shared his thoughts on the “marriage of the century.”
Sir Jackie Stewart’s opinion
“I was somewhat surprised too,” said the 85-year-old three-time F1 world champion, “by his choice, because Hamilton is now 40 years old and will be joining a team that has recently become very competitive again. Before, there had been many lows and just as many upheavals in Ferrari’s management structure. But now the situation is much more stable, and I’m sure Lewis was impressed by the setup at the Maranello factory. You can visit Red Bull or McLaren, but Ferrari’s factory has been around for much longer. I never drove for Ferrari, but I almost signed a contract with them. When I visited the factory, I was really amazed. It was something impressive, and the atmosphere there was incredible.” – added the former F1 driver who took part in the most important motorsport series between 1965 and 1973, winning three World Drivers’ Championships and twice finishing as runner-up over those nine F1 campaigns.
Sir Jackie Stewart then admitted that, even due to his age, Lewis Hamilton’s last career experience won’t be easy: “The Italians are great people, they always express themselves in a very colorful and passionate way. And I’m sure Lewis Hamilton will have the chance to experience that for himself. But it’s true that it will be a bit more complicated for him now than it would have been at 25 or 30 years old. I’m sure, however, that he still has the skills and talent, as we saw at Silverstone this year. Of course, sooner or later he will have to retire, but if he feels that moment hasn’t come yet, I understand that well. I’m also convinced that Lewis negotiated a particularly favorable deal with Ferrari, as the team certainly isn’t short of money.” – the British former Formula One racing driver concluded.
