According to Brazilian publication Grande Prêmio, the Australian driver could be preparing to leave McLaren at the end of the current season.
The report claims that Piastri’s decision is primarily influenced by the events of the 2026 campaign and the way he feels he has been treated within the team. With McLaren’s so-called “Papaya Rules” and Lando Norris carrying the number 1 on his car, Piastri is said to have concluded that he will never be regarded as the team’s leading driver.
The report also states that his manager, Mark Webber—who experienced life as a number two driver during his own Formula 1 career—is already exploring opportunities elsewhere.
Max Verstappen’s future could influence McLaren’s plans
According to the same report, McLaren would not be prepared to do everything possible to convince Piastri to stay. The team invested heavily to secure the Australian’s services in 2023, but the current situation could change dramatically if Max Verstappen becomes available on the driver market.
With Verstappen reportedly evaluating his future as well, McLaren is described as the only realistic destination currently open to the four-time world champion.
