Fresh speculation from the Netherlands has added another layer of intrigue to Formula 1’s driver market during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
While no major announcements have been made recently—the only significant confirmation remains Charles Leclerc’s contract extension with Ferrari—new reports are suggesting that some of the paddock’s biggest names could once again become central figures in a potentially explosive transfer market story.
The latest rumours revolve around two familiar protagonists whenever Formula 1’s driver market begins to heat up: Max Verstappen and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. The report comes from Dutch journalist Erik van Haren of De Telegraaf, a journalist widely regarded as one of the most reliable sources when it comes to developments surrounding the four-time World Champion and the Red Bull camp.
In an article published today, Van Haren once again linked Mercedes with a possible future move for Verstappen. According to the report, Mercedes could have the option of terminating George Russell’s contract if the British driver finds himself behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the championship standings by the summer break.
Such a scenario would not be unprecedented in Formula 1, as performance-related clauses have often been included in contracts between teams and drivers. At present, Russell trails the young Italian by 43 points in the championship, making any immediate recovery in the standings far from straightforward.
A potential three-way driver market battle
If the reported clause were to come into play, George Russell could find himself facing an extraordinary situation. After beginning the season looking like a genuine title favourite following the opening round in Australia, the British driver could potentially lose not only a shot at the world championship but also the Mercedes seat he worked so hard to secure after spending three years at Williams between 2019 and 2021.
According to Van Haren’s report, Toto Wolff could use such circumstances to make another aggressive attempt to sign Max Verstappen. At the same time, the Dutch driver’s own contract situation could theoretically allow him to explore an exit from Red Bull, opening the door to a move that has been discussed repeatedly over the past several years.
This time, however, the situation may be different. Mercedes has demonstrated impressive competitiveness during the opening phase of the season, and if that form continues, it could become increasingly difficult for Verstappen to dismiss the attraction of joining the Silver Arrows.
Yet the potential domino effect would not stop there.
Van Haren also reports that Red Bull has already identified a possible replacement should Verstappen decide to leave the team. According to the Dutch journalist, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri would be at the top of Laurent Mekies‘ wish list.
Such a move would represent a significant shift in Red Bull’s long-term planning, potentially taking priority over the team’s internal development options like Arvid Lindblad, Liam Lawson or Yuki Tsunoda.
Ironically, securing Piastri could prove even more difficult than signing Verstappen. McLaren has consistently stated its intention to retain its current driver pairing, and the Australian remains under contract with the Woking-based team until at least the end of the 2027 season.
Even so, Formula 1 contracts are often complex, and various performance or exit clauses can sometimes alter situations that initially appear impossible. For now, these remain rumours rather than confirmed negotiations, but the report highlights just how significant the consequences could be if Andrea Kimi Antonelli continues his remarkable campaign.
One thing seems certain: should the young Italian go on to mount a genuine championship-winning challenge this season, the impact could extend far beyond the title fight itself and potentially trigger one of the most dramatic driver market shake-ups seen in recent years.
