F1 | Max Verstappen did not hold back during the Bahrain F1 tests, highlighting what could be one of the major challenges of the 2026 season: the behavior of the Pirelli tires. The four-time world champion had another solid day behind the wheel of his Red Bull, but he also sounded a warning regarding a key aspect of car performance that could impact the entire season.
During the Bahrain tests, Max Verstappen and his team focused heavily on long-run simulations and finding the optimal balance for the car. The main goal was to fully understand the potential of the Red Bull RB22 in different track conditions ahead of the season opener. Despite the substantial mileage accumulated, Max Verstappen stressed that there is still a significant amount of data to analyze, particularly concerning tire behavior and the management of the car across varying temperatures and track surfaces.
Verstappen critical of Pirelli
“As a team, it was positive to focus today on long-run performance,” Max Verstappen explained. “We made some setup adjustments that have given us a good direction to take overnight. Having a full day of testing was valuable. The tires are extremely sensitive, so there is still a lot to analyze on that front.”
Looking ahead to the final day of testing before the trip to Melbourne, Red Bull’s priority remains accumulating as much data as possible to be fully prepared for the first competitive session of the season. Verstappen emphasized the importance of collecting information to optimize performance in the early races.
“On Friday, we will try to complete as many laps as possible between the drivers,” the Dutch driver added. “There is still so much to understand, so we hope to gather as much data as possible about the car in preparation for Melbourne.”
The warning from Verstappen highlights a recurring theme in 2026: Pirelli tires are proving to be extremely delicate and challenging to interpret. Teams will need to carefully manage tire temperatures, pressures, and degradation rates to extract the maximum performance without compromising reliability. For Red Bull, understanding these nuances will be crucial to maintaining their competitiveness at the start of the season.
Overall, the Bahrain tests showed that while Red Bull continues to demonstrate strong pace, there are significant technical aspects, especially regarding tire performance, that must be resolved. Max Verstappen’s observations underline the fact that even top teams must pay close attention to tire management strategies, as small errors in this area could have substantial consequences in both qualifying and race conditions.
