Mekies begins first day at Red Bull factory in Milton Keynes: team meeting and Verstappen’s arrival mark a pivotal moment
Just 24 hours after the dramatic and unexpected departure of Christian Horner from Red Bull Racing, a new chapter has officially begun at the team’s headquarters in Milton Keynes. The long-standing dominance of Horner, who had led the team since its inception in 2005, has come to an abrupt end, making way for Laurent Mekies to take over the reins. The French manager officially stepped into his new role this morning, addressing all staff members at the Red Bull Technology Campus during his first full-scale internal meeting with the team.
The appointment of Laurent Mekies represents not only a managerial change but a significant shift in the identity of the team. Red Bull Racing, under Christian Horner’s leadership, had become one of the most successful and influential operations in the modern era of Formula 1. Taking over such a legacy poses an immense challenge, and Mekies has stepped into that role amid a climate of uncertainty and emotional intensity.
Despite the abrupt nature of the leadership transition, Mekies is far from an unfamiliar figure within the Red Bull family. Prior to serving as Team Principal of the Racing Bulls (formerly AlphaTauri) since the beginning of the 2024 season, he had already held a pivotal role as Chief Engineer at the then-Toro Rosso team between 2006 and 2014. This history gives him a degree of institutional familiarity, although this new position places him at the helm of a much larger and more scrutinized operation. His professional home now shifts from Faenza, Italy, to the nerve center of Red Bull Racing in Milton Keynes, England.
The first hours of this new era were emotionally charged. Sources close to the team have revealed to FormulaPassion.it that the mood inside the Red Bull facility remains one of disbelief. The suddenness of Christian Horner’s exit has left a significant emotional void, especially considering that Horner was not only a widely respected leader among factory personnel but also the driving force behind the ambitious Red Bull Powertrains project. That internal engine program, headquartered in Milton Keynes, is set to debut on the Formula 1 grid in 2026, and Horner had been its most vocal champion.
Further emphasizing the gravity of the moment, Max Verstappen, the team’s lead driver and reigning world champion, made an appearance. According to flight tracking data, the Dutch driver’s private jet landed in the morning at Cranfield Airport, located just 20 minutes by car from the Red Bull headquarters. Although no official statements have been made, it is widely assumed that Verstappen made the visit specifically to meet with Mekies in person, underlining the importance of the new leadership structure to the future of the team.
Verstappen is expected to return to his residence in Monte Carlo later in the evening and then continue his short summer break in Sardinia. Interestingly, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is also reportedly vacationing on the same island, which has only intensified speculation surrounding Verstappen’s future.
Today’s meeting between Max Verstappen and Laurent Mekies could carry considerable weight in shaping the next phase of the Dutch driver’s career. Whether Verstappen opts to stay committed to Red Bull Racing through 2026 and beyond, or begins laying the groundwork for a departure from the team that has been his competitive home for over a decade, remains to be seen. However, the significance of this first interaction with the new team boss should not be underestimated.
In a Formula 1 environment where power dynamics can shift rapidly and behind-the-scenes relationships matter immensely, this first day at the Milton Keynes factory may mark a decisive step in Red Bull’s attempt to stabilize and reorient after the shock of losing one of the sport’s most iconic team leaders. Mekies now faces the daunting task of managing not just engineering performance and team cohesion, but also retaining the long-term trust and commitment of the most dominant driver of the current era.
