On Friday, Red Bull Racing announced a “series of organizational changes within its technical department” with the clear objective of “strengthening the focus on performance and innovation.” The Austrian team is aiming to refine its competitive edge through a revised internal structure, placing greater emphasis on both car development and on-track execution in an increasingly demanding Formula 1 environment.
Among the most notable changes, Red Bull confirmed that Head of Performance Engineering Ben Waterhouse has been promoted to the role of Chief Performance and Design Engineer. In this new position, Waterhouse will oversee both vehicle design and overall performance, reporting directly to technical director Pierre Waché. At the same time, former Racing Bulls deputy technical director Andrea Landi will step in to fill the gap created by Waterhouse’s promotion, taking on the role of Head of Performance at Red Bull starting from July 1.
Who is Ben Waterhouse?
The newly appointed Chief Performance and Design Engineer has been closely linked to Red Bull for more than two decades. He originally joined Jaguar Racing—later acquired by Red Bull in 2005—as a structural analysis engineer before transitioning into vehicle dynamics following the formation of Red Bull Racing.
In 2008, Waterhouse left Milton Keynes to join BMW Sauber, becoming part of a highly regarded group of engineers that included Pierre Waché and Ferrari engineer Loïc Serra. During his time there, he contributed to several of the Swiss team’s key achievements, eventually rising to the position of Head of Vehicle Performance.
He returned to the Red Bull family in 2014 as deputy technical director at Toro Rosso (now Racing Bulls, based in Faenza). Three years later, he moved back to Milton Keynes as Head of Performance Engineering at Red Bull Racing. By 2018, he had taken full leadership of the department, with a mandate to “optimize the car’s performance in the short, medium, and long term,” further cementing his reputation as a key figure within the team’s technical structure.
Who is Andrea Landi?
Although he will officially join Red Bull in July, Italian engineer Andrea Landi brings extensive Formula 1 experience to his new role. In addition to serving as deputy technical director at Racing Bulls, he previously worked at Scuderia Ferrari as deputy head of vehicle performance, gaining valuable insight into one of the sport’s most competitive environments.
Landi also has experience as a race engineer, notably working closely with Jaime Alguersuari at Toro Rosso during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, before continuing in the same role with Jean-Éric Vergne in 2012. After three seasons in Formula 1, he moved to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), where he worked as a race engineer with drivers such as Marco Wittmann and António Félix da Costa at BMW Team MTEK.
He later returned to Ferrari as Head of Vehicle Dynamics, before taking up his most recent position at Racing Bulls alongside technical director Guillaume Cattelani. His arrival at Red Bull is seen as a strategic move to further strengthen the team’s technical capabilities and maintain competitiveness in a rapidly evolving Formula 1 landscape.
