Sergio Perez is convinced that Red Bull can still beat McLaren in the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, thanks to a package of updates that will be applied to the RB20 during the United States Grand Prix weekend. The Mexican warns McLaren that Red Bull could “come back very strong” if the updates go in the right direction.
The Austrian team lost its lead in the Constructors’ Championship during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. After the Singapore race, McLaren has built a 41-point advantage over their rivals. However, Perez hopes that Red Bull can return to fight for victories.
“We have seen many positive signs with the car, so I really hope that in the coming weekends we will be on the right track. I believe it will be very important for us to become competitive again. This will be key for us,” Sergio Perez stated after the Singapore Grand Prix – “In Baku, we made a big step forward, discovering many things. If we can make further progress in this direction in the upcoming race weekends, I think we can be very competitive. I hope to bring a great package that can turn the situation around in the championship,” Sergio Perez added. The Mexican driver has not been on the podium since the Chinese Grand Prix in April.
However, Sergio Perez seems to overlook a crucial aspect: Red Bull’s loss of leadership is also due to their lack of performance, which has not contributed to the fight during this complicated time for the Austrian team. Max Verstappen also commented on the issue, stating that after winning the Drivers’ Title, Red Bull secured the Constructors’ Championship primarily due to his victories in almost every race, as there has never been real competition. The Dutchman emphasized that now that McLaren has become competitive, the gap between Red Bull and their rivals has narrowed significantly, as the papaya team is progressing with two competitive drivers, while Red Bull is relying almost exclusively on Max Verstappen‘s successes.
It should be noted that Red Bull will not be the only team introducing updates in Austin. McLaren has also announced improvements, while Ferrari and Mercedes are making small updates before fully focusing on the next Formula 1 season.
