Red Bull has reportedly recruited Gwen Lagrue from Mercedes in a significant move to strengthen its driver development structure following Helmut Marko’s departure. Gwen Lagrue has spent the past decade at Mercedes and played a central role in guiding Andrea Kimi Antonelli from karting to the lead of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.
The appointment represents an important incoming move for Laurent Mekies at a time when Red Bull’s continued loss of senior personnel has become an increasingly serious concern. Gwen Lagrue is expected to fill at least part of the considerable void left by Helmut Marko, although the precise date on which he can begin working at Milton Keynes has not yet been determined.
Red Bull recruits Gwen Lagrue from Mercedes
“I would like some engineers to stay,” Max Verstappen said during the press conference before the Belgian Grand Prix. His comment highlighted the scale of the staff exodus that Red Bull has experienced, with numerous prominent figures leaving the team over an extended period.
After so many departures, however, Red Bull has now secured a significant addition. As first reported by the BBC and subsequently confirmed by The Race, Laurent Mekies has succeeded in bringing Gwen Lagrue to Milton Keynes following 10 years with Mercedes.
During that period, Gwen Lagrue principally served as Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s “guardian angel”, overseeing and supporting the young Italian driver’s development from karting through the junior categories and into Formula 1. That journey has now taken Andrea Kimi Antonelli to the top of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings.
Gwen Lagrue’s work has been closely connected to one of Mercedes’ most important long-term projects. Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s development has continued at the highest level, with Toto Wolff recently praising the Italian driver’s maturity following his impressive Belgian Grand Prix victory.
Gwen Lagrue expected to fill Helmut Marko void
Gwen Lagrue is effectively expected to become Helmut Marko’s successor, filling a major gap within Red Bull’s management and driver development structure. However, it has not yet been established when the French specialist will be able to begin working for his new team.
Mercedes and Red Bull are currently negotiating the terms of Gwen Lagrue’s gardening leave. Until that process is completed, the date of his operational arrival at Milton Keynes will remain uncertain.
For Red Bull, the recruitment provides an experienced figure with an established record of identifying, supporting and developing young drivers. For Mercedes, it means losing a key figure behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s progression after a decade of collaboration.
Red Bull returns to Mercedes for another key appointment
This is not the first time Red Bull has recruited heavily from Mercedes. Christian Horner previously brought several Mercedes personnel to Milton Keynes while assembling Red Bull’s power unit programme, beginning with project leader Ben Hodgkinson.
Red Bull’s recent appointments from Mercedes have proved extremely successful, particularly when the performance of the team’s power unit is taken into consideration. Gwen Lagrue’s arrival will now be watched closely to see whether he can follow the same path and make an equally important contribution in his specialist area.
For Laurent Mekies, the move represents a notable response to Red Bull’s recent personnel losses. While the details of Gwen Lagrue’s role and starting date still need to be finalised, securing the long-time mentor of the current championship leader gives Red Bull an experienced figure capable of helping shape the next generation of its Formula 1 driver programme.
