The relationship between Max Verstappen and the British press once again proved tense in the aftermath of the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Dutch driver’s victory was not enough to secure the championship, which ultimately went to Lando Norris, and yet the post-race press conference was dominated by a heated exchange with an English journalist. The dynamic came as no surprise: the atmosphere between the four-time world champion and the UK media has been complicated for years.
Verstappen: “Just remember Barcelona”
The roots of this hostility can be traced back to his rivalry with Lewis Hamilton, a period during which tensions had already solidified. According to many observers, Verstappen’s direct and sometimes uncompromising attitude has never aligned well with the more formal expectations of the British media environment. For several years, the Dutchman dominated Formula 1 without leaving space for rivals, becoming a frequent target of criticism often tied to race incidents.
The end of his winning cycle—made possible by Lando Norris’s title—has only intensified this climate. The Abu Dhabi press conference became yet another opportunity for a verbal confrontation. The critical point emerged when a British journalist suggested that Max Verstappen’s incident with George Russell in Spain had ultimately cost him the world championship.
In Barcelona, after the Safety Car restart, Max Verstappen collided with the Mercedes and received a ten-second penalty that dropped him five positions. At the time, with Red Bull struggling compared to McLaren, the episode seemed minor. But the fierce title fight of recent months has caused every detail to be re-evaluated. Having lost the championship by only two points, Max forcefully rejected that interpretation.
“You forget everything else about my season,” Max Verstappen replied to the journalist. “The only thing you mentioned is Barcelona. I knew this kind of question would come. And now you’re even giving me that idiotic smile. You live and learn. And in the second half of the year, I also received several early Christmas gifts.” The reference was clearly aimed at how McLaren had accidentally helped him on multiple occasions.
Verstappen dislikes criticism based on assumptions
The back-and-forth highlighted just how deteriorated the relationship has become between Verstappen and the British media. UK outlets have often criticized his aggressive approach on track, while the Dutchman feels that he is consistently judged with prejudice. Norris’s title—making him the first British champion since Lewis Hamilton—has inevitably amplified the national narrative.
Max, for his part, did not miss the chance to reaffirm his stance, as direct as ever. From a sporting perspective, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix did not offer Red Bull any real opportunity for extreme strategies. Max Verstappen needed a win with Norris finishing off the podium, an outcome that was never truly realistic during the race.
The two McLarens maintained a steady pace, supported by a two-stop strategy that allowed both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to control the race with relative comfort. Ferrari and Mercedes were simply not competitive enough to join the battle. Verstappen explained that several hypothetical tactics discussed before the race were impossible to apply.
“I had many scenarios in mind, but with Oscar on the hards I knew it would be complicated. We were probably too fast at the front and the others couldn’t keep up with us,” he added, also acknowledging Charles Leclerc’s attempts to enter the fight for the podium. In the end, the Abu Dhabi evening delivered Norris his first world championship and reignited attention on the explosive relationship between Max Verstappen and the British media.
For the Dutchman and four-time world champion, there remains the frustration of a title lost by the narrowest of margins, right at the final moment, but also the conviction that he had given everything in his pursuit. The heated exchange in the press conference was not an isolated incident but rather the latest chapter in a tension that is expected to continue into next season.
