In the final months of 2024, controversies centered around the language used by drivers, which the Federation deemed inappropriate. With the 2025 season approaching, the FIA has tightened penalties for drivers who use improper language or express their opinions. Red Bull wasted no time in responding, given their driver’s past experiences.
The first to find himself under scrutiny last season was Max Verstappen. During Thursday’s press conference in Singapore, the four-time World Champion used terms that the FIA did not appreciate.
As a result, the Federation decided to penalize Verstappen by assigning him community service, a punishment he had already faced following the altercation with Esteban Ocon in Brazil. After the Marina Bay incident, the Dutchman chose to respond with monosyllables to every press conference question. He later clarified that he would answer more thoroughly outside the press room, using terms he deemed appropriate.
Turning to Red Bull’s jab at the Federation, it’s important to note that the FIA recently outlined new sanctions to be implemented this season. Drivers are now prohibited from using language that could cause moral harm to the FIA or other F1 entities. They are also barred from expressing political, religious, or other personal opinions. Additionally, they risk being banned if they fail to comply with FIA guidelines during official ceremonies.
Following the publication of these guidelines on drivers’ expression, Red Bull was quick to respond. The Austrian team shared a photo of Max Verstappen during an interview. The caption read: “If we speak…” referencing the numerous topics F1 personalities can no longer discuss and the restrictions on how they can express themselves.
