F1 | The Antonelli controversy continues: Mercedes responds to Red Bull

Mercedes has responded to Red Bull following the clarification issued by the Milton Keynes team regarding the serious accusations aimed at Kimi Antonelli after the Qatar Grand Prix. The young driver found himself at the center of a complex situation involving both Mercedes and Red Bull, entangled in a web of accusations, explanations, and official statements that highlight the tense atmosphere currently surrounding Formula 1.

The controversy erupted after the Qatar Grand Prix when Kimi Antonelli became the target of intense online attacks following speculations during the race about his behavior towards Lando Norris. Specific claims from Red Bull’s environment fueled the narrative suggesting that Antonelli had deliberately allowed the English driver to overtake him. This interpretation triggered a wave of social media abuse, prompting both teams to intervene to restore a more responsible discussion.

Accusations and clarifications

The first to step back was Red Bull, which issued an official statement on Monday denying any misconduct by the rookie. Helmut Marko subsequently retracted his previous comments, helping to calm a situation that had escalated rapidly. Mercedes welcomed the move, expressing appreciation through their deputy technical director, Simone Resta.

“It was rather disappointing to see the abuse directed at Antonelli,” Simone Resta said, emphasizing the team’s commitment to combating online toxicity. “With our communications team, we work extensively on tools and platforms to create a safe space for fans.”

Simone Resta then provided a detailed explanation of the on-track incident, clarifying that Kimi Antonelli’s exit was due to technical factors rather than any intentional behavior: “He was driving at the limit, with more worn tires compared to Norris. He was trying to attack Carlos Sainz entering DRS but was losing aerodynamic load due to the slipstream. There was a snap and he lost the position.”

The overall picture that emerges is that of a complex racing incident, which became a fertile ground for overinterpretations and disproportionate reactions. Although the controversy has now been de-escalated, it underscores how fragile communication around younger drivers can be and highlights the need for greater responsibility when managing narratives in modern Formula 1.

Although both teams have now drawn a line under the matter, the episode has exposed how quickly innocent moments can spiral into toxic narratives in the modern F1 era – and how vulnerable young drivers remain when championship stakes run sky-high.
