Amid reports that the Grove team has offered Carlos Sainz a deal worth €30 million to convince him to stay, the former F1 driver has raised Red Bull, McLaren and Audi as possible alternatives for 2027.
The speculation comes during a deeply disappointing campaign for Williams. After the encouraging results achieved last year, when Carlos Sainz made his debut for the team following his time at Ferrari, the opening half of 2026 has fallen well short of expectations.

Williams encountered difficulties with Formula 1’s new technical regulations even before the championship began, and the competitiveness of the car has not matched the team’s pre-season expectations. Despite the size of the reported proposal and a salary befitting one of Formula 1’s leading drivers, Carlos Sainz’s time with Williams could nevertheless be approaching its conclusion.
Questions over his future had already intensified during the summer, with reports surrounding Carlos Sainz’s options for a potential 2027 move adding another element to Formula 1’s developing driver market.

One former Williams driver who believes Carlos Sainz could be heading elsewhere is Ralf Schumacher. The German claimed all six of his Formula 1 victories with Williams during the early 2000s and now works as a pundit for Sky Deutschland.
Ralf Schumacher believes the 31-year-old Spaniard has rejected Williams’ proposal and suggested several possible explanations, including the uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull.
“I’m curious to see what happens with Carlos Sainz,” Ralf Schumacher said. “Apparently he has rejected an offer from Williams. Is it perhaps linked to the possibility of Max Verstappen leaving Red Bull? Oscar Piastri has lost some of his prestige and shine. Or is Carlos Sainz perhaps even heading to Audi?”
Ralf Schumacher’s comments remain speculation rather than confirmation that Carlos Sainz is negotiating with any of those teams. However, they underline how Williams’ disappointing 2026 campaign could influence the Spaniard’s decision as he considers where he has the best opportunity to compete at the front in the future.

Ralf Schumacher was also critical of Williams’ performance under the new regulations and believes the team made a major mistake with its 2026 car. In particular, he questioned how effectively team principal James Vowles prepared for his first opportunity to oversee the creation of a completely new Formula 1 car under a fresh set of technical rules.
“The situation is tense at Williams. The team made a big mistake with the car. James Vowles, who for the first time had the opportunity to build a car from scratch with the new regulations, clearly didn’t prepare adequately. There are certainly going to be clashes there too.”
Williams now faces an important second half of the season both on and off the track. The team must demonstrate that it can recover from the problems that have compromised its 2026 campaign while simultaneously attempting to convince Carlos Sainz that Grove remains the right place for his long-term ambitions.
For the moment, there is no confirmation that Carlos Sainz has agreed to join another team. Ralf Schumacher’s comments instead add to the growing speculation surrounding one of the most important potential moves in the 2027 driver market, with Williams’ ability to show meaningful progress likely to remain central to the Spaniard’s decision.
