Former German driver questions the sustainability of Lawrence Stroll’s leadership model
Ralf Schumacher has launched a strong criticism of Lawrence Stroll and his management of Aston Martin. Speaking on the Sky Sports Germany podcast “Backstage Boxengasse,” the former Formula 1 driver openly questioned the long-term sustainability of the Canadian billionaire’s leadership approach.
After a disappointing pre-season marked by a lack of pace and reliability issues, Schumacher suggested that the atmosphere inside the Silverstone-based team is far from improving. Aston Martin completed fewer laps than any other team during testing in Bahrain, raising further concerns ahead of the new season.
A difficult management style
“I have to say that we haven’t always been the biggest supporters of the whole project,” Schumacher began. “Lawrence Stroll has his own way of doing things. He doesn’t really talk to anyone. You see him around, but he hardly ever gives interviews. And he hasn’t earned that position through major results.”
The German then went further: “That obviously creates a huge problem within the team. I think Lawrence is taking on a lot of responsibility because he acts more or less like an autocrat. I’m curious to see whether he will be able to withstand the pressure from investors.”
Risk of internal tensions
Schumacher warned that without rapid progress, tensions could quickly escalate: “This season will be a huge test of patience. They absolutely must avoid tearing themselves apart internally. Alonso is presumably in his final year and he certainly won’t be happy.”
The former driver also mentioned Adrian Newey: “Adrian is obviously very disappointed with the situation. He had imagined all of this in a much more positive way. The pressure is at its maximum.”
Moving sideways rather than forward
Schumacher concluded with a cautious note of hope: “At the moment, Aston Martin is moving sideways rather than forward. I can only hope that they give the team and Newey time. I believe he has made good decisions, but the results will not come immediately.”
