The rain seems to have taken a liking to Pirelli’s F1 tire development tests in this last quarter of 2024.
After last week’s sessions at Magny-Cours, where both days were marked by extremely challenging weather conditions, today’s session at the Mugello Circuit also saw rain dominating from the early hours of the morning.
Moreover, low visibility around the Tuscan circuit prevented the rescue helicopter from taking off for a long time, and as a result, the cars were hardly able to run throughout the day.
Today’s program was divided into two parts. Red Bull, with its reserve driver Liam Lawson, who will drive for the Visa CashApp RB team at the upcoming United States Grand Prix at the 5.513-kilometre Circuit of The Americas in Austin, was tasked with finalizing compounds for 2025.
McLaren, on the other hand, with Lando Norris behind the wheel of a mule car, was testing for the first time the prototype tires that will be used starting in 2026. These tires will maintain the current 18-inch wheel diameter but will have slightly smaller width and external diameter on both the front and rear axles.
The tests will continue tomorrow, weather permitting. In addition to the two teams present today, Ferrari will join with Charles Leclerc, who will also be working on the tires for next year.
