“Piastri like Senna, but also like Karthikeyan”: absurd analogy about Australian’s inconsistency. Daniel Juncadella believes that in 2024, Australian driver Oscar Piastri was too inconsistent.

Oscar Piastri, 2024 F1

Oscar Piastri is certainly one of the most talented drivers on the grid, as shown by his exceptional results in the lower categories and his excellent performances in his first two seasons in Formula 1 with McLaren. However, Daniel Juncadella believes that in 2024, the Australian driver was too inconsistent, with highs like Senna and performances that were more than mediocre.

Daniel Juncadella, who will be a simulator driver for Aston Martin in 2025, a role he has also held for Williams and Force India in the past, commented on Oscar Piastri’s season, noting his lack of consistency in performances.

The Spanish driver compared Oscar Piastri to Senna for the magic moments he showed on track, such as the overtakes on Lando Norris in Monza and on Charles Leclerc in Baku, but also to Narain Karthikeyan, a largely forgettable driver who scored only five points in his career, all at the infamous 2005 United States Grand Prix.

On the performance of the Australian, who was only occasionally able to show superiority over Lando Norris, Daniel Juncadella said: “It’s different working with your teammate when only one of you can reach Verstappen in the championship, compared to when both of you are really fighting to win the World Championship.”

“We’ll see what happens next season. What struck me about Oscar Piastri last season was that I expected more from him in many situations. One weekend, he was like Senna, and the next weekend he was like Karthikeyan.”

“Suddenly, he was completely absent. And that’s what happened. Suddenly, he seemed disconnected. I saw it myself in many weekends. Sometimes, when I was in the simulator afterwards, I would listen to the briefings and notice that he was a little unsure and a bit lost.” – he pointed out.

“This is what makes F1 so difficult. When you switch off for a weekend, you’re already a little under the spotlight… and you lose some confidence. Piastri is a driver with an impeccable career in the lower categories, and I expect great things from him.”

In any case, Oscar Piastri, in his second season, managed to secure two victories, and the future seems to hold many more for him. Consistency is certainly a factor not to be overlooked, but one that the Australian can work on to aim for much more.
