Andrea Kimi Antonelli enjoyed a second-place finish at the Australian F1 Grand Prix after a challenging start, strong recovery, and impressive race pace. While the Mercedes team celebrated a dominant one-two finish, the young Bolognese driver used his skill and the Brackley team’s strategy to secure the runner-up position.
The Australian Grand Prix concluded largely as expected: the two Mercedes cars claimed a commanding one-two finish, demonstrating the strength of their chassis-power unit package, which could pose a significant challenge for rival teams’ development efforts. George Russell took the win, Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished second, and Charles Leclerc completed the podium. Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari came in fourth.
Ferrari might have considered pitting during the first Virtual Safety Car to aim higher, but the Maranello engineers decided to keep both the #16 and #44 cars on track, perhaps to ensure better tyre management toward the end of the race. For Antonelli, this marks the fourth podium of his career.
Antonelli’s satisfaction in Australia
Interviewed by Jenson Button after the race, Andrea Kimi Antonelli expressed his full satisfaction with his performance: It was the best start to the season we could have hoped for. The start was bad—I lost many positions and had to fight back. The race itself, however, was good. I had strong pace, and I can’t wait for the next one. The Grand Prix was incredible, the Overtake Mode gives us so much boost for overtaking. Now I need a bit of rest.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s performance in Melbourne highlights a mature approach to racing, turning a “terrible” start into a podium finish through composed energy management and aggressive use of the new Overtake Mode. While the Mercedes 1-2 confirms their early-season dominance, Antonelli’s excitement about the new technical tools suggests that the learning curve for these 2026 machines is something he is navigating faster than most of the grid.
