Oscar Piastri’s unbelievable team radio at Silverstone sparks debate after costly penalty. Oscar Piastri makes a controversial radio request to McLaren after receiving a penalty at Silverstone.

Oscar Piastri, 2024 F1

During the dramatic 2025 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Australian driver Oscar Piastri made headlines not only for his on-track performance but also for an unexpected and controversial radio message sent to the McLaren team, particularly following the time penalty he had just received. The race itself was nothing short of chaotic—a classic British Grand Prix filled with unpredictable weather conditions, which included light rain, heavy downpours, and sudden bursts of sunshine in the final stages of the event.

As the race approached its conclusion at the historic Silverstone Circuit, Oscar Piastri opened up over the team radio and made a request that left many stunned—especially considering it came right after he had been penalized by the FIA race stewards.

What happened to Oscar Piastri?

The incident occurred around the halfway mark of the race, during a restart following the deployment of the Safety Car. The intervention came after French driver Isack Hadjar had to retire, prompting Race Control to neutralize the race. As the field prepared to go racing again, Oscar Piastri—just like George Russell had done in the Canadian Grand Prix earlier in the season—performed a braking manoeuvre in front of Max Verstappen. It happened on the Hangar Straight, just before the Stowe corner. Piastri decelerated abruptly, catching Verstappen by surprise and allowing the Dutch driver to briefly overtake him.

As per FIA regulations, overtaking is strictly prohibited during Safety Car conditions. No driver is allowed to pull alongside or pass another car until the race resumes. The stewards immediately opened an investigation into the incident. Initially, there were concerns that Max Verstappen could face a severe penalty—even a potential disqualification—for overtaking under the Safety Car. However, after reviewing the data, the stewards deemed Oscar Piastri to be at fault for slowing down too aggressively without a justifiable reason, thereby triggering the situation.

The penalty handed down to Oscar Piastri was a 10-second time penalty, to be served at his next pit stop. The timing of the penalty effectively removed him from contention for the race victory. And that’s exactly what happened. When Piastri came in to switch to the medium compound tyres for his final stint, the McLaren mechanics had to remain stationary for 10 full seconds before beginning the service. Once he rejoined the race, Oscar Piastri found himself approximately six seconds behind his teammate Lando Norris, who was leading the race at that point.

With only a few laps remaining, Oscar Piastri made a surprising and bold request via team radio.

Piastri’s controversial radio message

Opening up to his race engineer, Oscar Piastri said: “I don’t think the penalty I received earlier was very fair. I mean, I know it’s a serious matter, but if you guys also think it wasn’t fair, then maybe we should swap positions again and fight.” The comment, which aired live during the race broadcast, immediately raised eyebrows across the paddock and among fans.

McLaren’s response was swift and firm. The team refused the suggestion outright. Given that Lando Norris had controlled the race from the front and was on course for a well-earned victory, entertaining such a request would have introduced unnecessary risk and potentially jeopardized a one-two finish or even the win itself for the Woking-based team.

Oscar Piastri had shown impressive pace throughout the race and delivered a strong performance at Silverstone. However, the combination of his penalty and this controversial message added a layer of tension and drama to what was already an action-packed and unpredictable Grand Prix.
