In Formula 1, gaps are not measured only in tenths of a second, but also in silences, subtle shifts, and changing roles within a driver’s inner circle. That is why, when Mark Webber began to appear less visibly alongside Oscar Piastri, the paddock quickly started asking questions. There were no official statements, no clear signals—just a new dynamic that seemed to suggest something had changed. Yet, as is often the case in Formula 1, appearances can be misleading.
Piastri responds: no split, just evolution
Oscar Piastri has now moved to clarify the situation: there is no breakdown in his relationship with Mark Webber, and no hidden tension behind the scenes. Speaking to Fox Sports, the McLaren driver explained that his long-time mentor remains actively involved in his career, even if his role is now less visible compared to the early stages.
“I’m still very involved and I’ve spoken a lot with him since the start of the year,” Oscar Piastri said. “I’m gaining more experience in my career, and there’s also the fact that, with more experience, I can make some of these decisions and ask some of these questions myself.”
According to the Australian driver, this shift is a natural part of his development:
“Especially in the first two years, Mark would ask me a lot of questions that I hadn’t even thought about… I think now some of those questions come to me much more naturally. It’s simply a natural evolution, really.”
The new figure in his management structure, Pedro Matos, is not a replacement but rather an addition to the team supporting Oscar Piastri. However, in the Formula 1 paddock, absence often carries more weight than presence, and even subtle changes can quickly fuel speculation.
A moving future: driver market, limits and speculation
After coming close to fighting for the 2025 title, expectations surrounding Oscar Piastri have risen sharply. However, the opening races of the current season have revealed a McLaren package that appears less dominant than anticipated, inevitably triggering fresh rumours across the paddock. An ambitious young driver, an influential manager, and a constantly evolving driver market form a combination that naturally attracts attention.
Piastri’s “multi-year” contract ties him to the Woking-based team, but it does not necessarily lock him in completely. Within the paddock, some believe that Mark Webber could already be evaluating future opportunities, even if realistic options appear limited at this stage. At the same time, McLaren increasingly looks like a team being shaped around a single driver—a scenario that brings to mind the current structure seen at Max Verstappen’s team.
There is also one detail that insiders never overlook: when Mark Webber makes a move, he tends to do so with long-term intent and strategic depth.
For now, Oscar Piastri speaks of evolution rather than distance. Mark Webber may be less visible, but he has not disappeared. And as McLaren works to rediscover its competitive edge, the Formula 1 driver market is heading toward a potentially pivotal summer—one that could reshape more than a few competitive balances. In this context, the real question is not whether there is a fracture, but rather what might be unfolding behind the scenes.
