Oscar Piastri has already learned a harsh lesson in his first two appearances of the 2026 season: in Formula 1, mistakes are unforgiving, and opportunities often do not return.
The Australian’s season debut at his home Grand Prix in Melbourne turned into a nightmare even before the lights went out. The McLaren driver was unable to start the race due to an incident during the formation lap, an event both unusual and symbolic of the challenges posed by the new cars.
From the disappointment in Australia, attention shifted to the Chinese Grand Prix, where Saturday hinted at more promising signs. Securing his first four points of the season represented a small but meaningful step forward, helping restore confidence and morale after the Albert Park setback.
However, Sunday erased all progress. A technical disaster related to reliability issues prevented both papaya-colored cars from taking the start. Zero chance of redemption and another weekend gone, leaving behind frustration and hard lessons that are difficult to ignore.
What happened to Oscar Piastri is the clearest demonstration of a simple yet merciless truth: in Formula 1, you must seize every single opportunity.
And what does that really mean? It means that when you have a competitive, potentially dominant car – as the MCL39 once was – you must be ready to exploit it fully, without hesitation or wasted laps.
Last season, Oscar, unlike his teammate, failed to do so at the crucial stage of the championship. After all, it is precisely at this point where titles are made – or, in his case, lost.
Now, the Australian must live with a harsh but inevitable realization. While his teammate proudly displays the number 1 on the papaya livery after an impeccable campaign, Piastri carries the weight of a missed opportunity – one that may never return.
The MCL40 is not yet ready to challenge the frontrunners
Adding to Oscar Piastri’s frustration is the stark reality of a car that started the season with several issues. Leaving aside the engine, where no Mercedes-powered team has yet fully understood the intricacies of the power unit, the MCL40 exhibits other weaknesses.
“The gap to Mercedes? I’d say 50% is the engine, and the rest comes down to not having enough aerodynamic load,” explained Andrea Stella.
Furthermore, after the Chinese Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri himself stated that the team is still trying to fully understand how these new power units work. “I think they are incredibly complex. There are so many rules regarding the engines that sometimes changing one thing can lead to completely unexpected consequences elsewhere.”
“Let’s just say we’re learning the hardest part. That is, even if we know we want to do something differently, we can’t, because everything has to be programmed or the code needs to be modified. It’s a bit complicated.”
Piastri’s experience serves as a warning for Andrea Kimi Antonelli
Piastri’s trajectory serves as a silent yet extremely concrete warning. In F1, time waits for no one, and what today seems like a growing path can quickly turn into a lost opportunity.
This lesson applies closely to Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian is in a very different position: a competitive Mercedes, a solid project, and a real chance to fight for the championship. For this reason, Piastri’s experience should serve as a reference.
At this level, talent alone is not enough. Clarity of mind, consistency, and the ability to maximize every single weekend are essential. Antonelli has a rare opportunity, one that could define a career. Wasting it, even partially, could expose him to the same type of regret that now accompanies the McLaren driver.
After all, Formula 1 does not forgive, does not guarantee second chances, and above all, waits for no one. Today more than ever, Piastri knows this well.
