Just a week ago, Oscar Piastri left his home race in Australia with a major regret—failing to capitalize on the car’s potential due to an unpredictable mistake when the rain arrived.
A week later, Oscar Piastri is back on the top step, with the feeling that he has reclaimed what slipped away seven days earlier. An important victory in the Chinese Grand Prix, built primarily in qualifying—not just because he was able to run in clean air, but also because it allowed him to immediately extend his advantage over key rivals, including Lando Norris.
Saturday’s sprint race already showed that the Australian had the pace to fight at the front, but getting stuck in traffic during his battle with Max Verstappen ultimately cost him and kept him out of contention for the win. Securing pole position in the second qualifying session of the weekend, however, was the first crucial step toward sealing victory in the race.
Oscar Piastri’s lead was never truly in doubt. Despite a less-than-perfect start, he quickly managed to close the door on George Russell, preventing the Briton from challenging him into Turn 1. From that point on, the McLaren driver controlled the race with ease, managing his tires well—especially as it became clear that a one-stop strategy was viable.
With McLaren now emerging as the leading team, the dream of a title challenge is alive, and Oscar Piastri knows it. Scoring consistent points at this stage of the championship, when the MCL39 is a regular contender for victory, is crucial—not only for the title fight but also to put pressure on Norris, who had an error-filled weekend in China.
“Is this the start of my title chase? I hope so. It’s been an incredible weekend from start to finish. Mega, all the way through. Today, the tire behavior was a bit surprising. I’m proud of the whole weekend—I feel like this is what we deserved after last week. I’m extremely happy. The team did an excellent job with a one-two finish.”
Compared to yesterday’s expectations, the tires performed better than anticipated. The first stint still saw some challenges in managing the medium compound, which was more prone to graining, particularly with a full fuel load. However, as the track rubbered in and conditions improved, the hard tire performed beyond expectations, allowing for an extended second stint and a run to the checkered flag.
“We were surprised by the tires. I think the medium was still a bit tricky to manage but better than yesterday. Then the hard tire turned out to be much better than anyone expected—or at least better than we expected. Making it to the end was a bit of a surprise, but a nice one,” Oscar Piastri added.
“I’m really proud of the race we managed to put together. It wasn’t an easy race, and yes, I’m proud of the whole team and the weekend we delivered.”
