A turning point in the season

Victory on a track that, at least on paper, was expected to favour his main title rival, combined with that very rival’s retirement while running comfortably in second place. If Oscar Piastri could have scripted his ideal Zandvoort weekend, he probably would not have dared to hope for such good fortune. The Australian’s triumph at the Dutch Grand Prix, together with Lando Norris’ technical retirement, has pushed him 34 points clear of his teammate in the championship standings.

With nine races still to go, including three weekends featuring a Sprint race, it is far too early to consider the World Championship battle settled. However, it is now inevitable that car number 81 is seen as the clear favourite for the final crown. Yet the McLaren driver himself, speaking in the post-race press conference, wanted to remain grounded and dismissed the idea of speculating about his advantage.

Not the time to speculate

“A margin to play with? No, I don’t think so,” Oscar Piastri stated. “There is still a long way to go. I need to keep pushing and trying to win races. I wouldn’t call it a very comfortable margin. As we saw today, everything can change very quickly with just one retirement. So, at this stage of the championship, it’s not really a safe advantage.” – the Australian concluded at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix.

Up until now, neither of the two McLaren teammates fighting for the crown had been able to rely on such a large gap in the standings. This turning point has arrived just as Formula 1 prepares to enter the final third of the season, with only two more races in Europe before the decisive run through Asia and the Americas that will ultimately determine the 2025 World Champion.
