Oscar Piastri surpasses Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen with historic winning streak. Oscar Piastri makes McLaren history with three consecutive F1 wins.

Oscar Piastri, 2024 F1

Oscar Piastri is already a McLaren legend in F1: with his three consecutive victories, he surpasses Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, and Jenson Button. Not since Mika Hakkinen—who won the European, Australian, and Brazilian Grands Prix in 1998—had a Woking driver achieved such a feat. His lead in the championship grows, now 16 points ahead of Lando Norris.

Cold, methodical, ruthless: the Oscar Piastri who puts on the helmet and lowers the visor is a formidable driver. He has only been in Formula 1 for three seasons—debuting in Bahrain in 2023, driving the MCL60—but already seems like a veteran. His first podium came in his rookie season, with second place at Suzuka. His first win came nearly a year later, at the controversial Hungarian Grand Prix. This year, he is dominating.

He won in Shanghai, had to settle behind his teammate and Max Verstappen in the challenging Japanese GP, then came three consecutive victories: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami. He leads the championship, pulling away from the pre-season favourite, Lando Norris, and shows no signs of slowing down. After Mika Hakkinen in 1998, he is the first McLaren driver to win three races in a row. Even Lewis Hamilton didn’t manage that between 2007 and 2012.

Oscar Piastri: “I knew what I had to do to win”
After the race, the Australian again calmly analysed his performance: “At the start, it was tough trying to get past Max [Verstappen]. I gave it everything I had to overtake him. It wasn’t easy, but I picked the right moment to do it. I realised early on that we had strong pace and that it was only a matter of when I could pass, not if.”

“I wanted to do it as efficiently as possible because I knew that if Lando caught up to me, he would attack. I aimed to get by quickly but cleanly. I think I did a good job in that regard, then I built a gap. Maybe it wasn’t the best second half of a race I’ve ever had, but I think creating that margin and being fast at the right times was what I needed.”

“We’ll definitely analyse what we did this weekend and try to replicate this kind of performance in every race, but there are still areas to work on—both personally and as a team.”
