Oscar Piastri has returned to form and secured pole position in the Sprint Qualifying of the Qatar Grand Prix. His post-session comments show the Australian is ready to make his mark in the championship again.
Piastri is very much still in contention and sent a clear message after the Qatar GP Sprint Qualifying. Following a promising FP1 where improvements were already visible, he confirmed his pace during the qualifying session. It’s thrilling to see a driver who had struggled regain his confidence and now be able to challenge for the championship once again.
After all, this is his track. In 2023, Oscar claimed his first pole and first Sprint victory here, making Lusail the perfect circuit to regain his rhythm. Following a difficult stretch that began around the Monza GP, Piastri has finally hit the reset button. With teammate Lando Norris starting only third and Max Verstappen in sixth, he has a chance to claw back valuable points in the championship.
His words after the session
In the usual post-session interview, Oscar Piastri appeared genuinely happy. Asked about the qualifying, he said: “It’s a day where things just clicked from the start. The session went very well; I had a little scare during my lap, but in the end I managed to keep the car under control. Thanks to the team for giving me a great car.”
Regarding his small mistake, he added: “I definitely made an error and it probably cost me at least a tenth, but the result is excellent. There are a few things we still need to sort out, but it’s nice to say it when you start from pole.”
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s Sprint and Sunday’s race, Oscar Piastri remained confident: “I’m very optimistic for tomorrow. It’s just a pole and a sprint, there aren’t many points on the line, but I’ll take everything I can get.” On the potential for an even stronger performance, he said: “It’s hard to say because Sprint weekends are always tricky. The car feels very good; we made a few small adjustments before qualifying, but the pace was there throughout the day, so hopefully we can keep it going.” – the Australian driver concluded.
With the title fight heating up heading into the final two rounds, Oscar Piastri’s message is crystal clear: write him off at your peril.
