Oscar Piastri was left regretting a missed opportunity in Spanish Grand Prix qualifying at the Madring after his decisive Q3 lap unravelled almost immediately. McLaren clearly had the pace to fight at the front, with Lando Norris producing an outstanding lap to secure pole position, but Oscar Piastri experienced the other side of Saturday: a single corner and a moment out of rhythm were enough to turn a promising session into a frustrating result.
On a new, technical and unpredictable street circuit, rhythm is everything. It is built corner by corner, protected throughout the lap and constantly pursued. Once it disappears, recovering it can be extremely difficult. That was the problem for Oscar Piastri in Madrid, adding another frustrating chapter to a season in which he has struggled to find the same natural feeling with the car.

Oscar Piastri’s interview with Craig Slater captured the disappointment of a qualifying session that had promised much more. With Lando Norris on pole and his McLaren team-mate further down the order, the Australian did not look for excuses and instead accepted responsibility for the lap that ultimately cost him.
“I think the first lap wasn’t too bad, but the second lap was really, really disappointing, to be honest. So yeah, disappointing.”
The key moment came at Turn 1, the first building block of the entire lap.
“Turn 1 didn’t start very well and in some places I was definitely a lot better than on the previous lap, but yeah, once you lose the rhythm around here, life becomes really tough.”
The Madring’s tightly connected sequences and the need to trust the available grip mean an early mistake can have consequences far beyond a single corner. If the first sector does not come together properly, the remainder of the lap quickly becomes an attempt to recover lost time rather than a natural progression from one corner to the next.
That difficulty has been one of the recurring themes of Formula 1’s first weekend at the new Madrid venue, where drivers have also highlighted the demanding nature of the Madring circuit and the small margins available around its narrow sections.
Piastri says McLaren had the pace but consistency was missing
Despite the disappointing outcome, Oscar Piastri did not believe outright speed was the fundamental issue. His assessment was that the pace had been reasonable throughout the weekend, but producing it consistently was another matter.
“I feel like this weekend the pace has been reasonable. It was just about trying to be consistent and, you know, unfortunately it was one of those sessions where you wish you could do it again.”
That is what makes the result particularly frustrating. Oscar Piastri knew there was speed available, but he was unable to put together the decisive lap when it mattered most. On the other side of the McLaren garage, Lando Norris demonstrated exactly what the MCL40 was capable of by converting its potential into pole position.
The contrast also reflects the different experiences of the two McLaren drivers during the 2026 season. Lando Norris has spoken about the changes that have allowed him to become a stronger Formula 1 driver this year, while Oscar Piastri has found it more difficult to establish the feeling he wants with the current generation of car.

Attention now turns to Sunday and a question that has followed the Madrid weekend from the beginning: how much overtaking will actually be possible, or could the Madring become another circuit where track position dominates?
The layout is narrow and technical, with relatively few obvious opportunities to attack. However, the race could still create openings through tyre degradation, incidents and neutralisations, all of which could disrupt the expected order.
Oscar Piastri knows those variables could become important.
“Yeah, definitely, we’ll have to wait and see. Overtaking certainly won’t be easy and there’s a big question mark over tyre degradation, so we’ll have to wait and see how it goes.”
Sunday will therefore place a premium on reacting to events in real time. Strategy calls, tyre behaviour and the ability to capitalise on opportunities could become just as important as outright pace. A Safety Car, a mistake from a driver ahead or an unexpected drop in tyre performance could transform the race within a matter of laps.
Tyre degradation could create opportunities at the Madring
Oscar Piastri does not start from the position he would have wanted, but he does have one major advantage: McLaren has a fast and stable car and has shown competitive race pace throughout the weekend.
If Piastri can rediscover the rhythm that disappeared during qualifying, Sunday could become an opportunity for recovery. Much will depend on tyre degradation and whether differences in strategy create chances to gain positions on a circuit where passing on track could otherwise prove difficult.
The slow-speed behaviour of the MCL40 will also remain relevant. Lando Norris has previously identified McLaren’s low-speed weakness as an important area to improve, and the Madring combines those slower sections with sequences where maintaining confidence and rhythm is essential.
McLaren is continuing to develop the car as well, with the team already looking ahead to further upgrades planned around the Baku weekend as it searches for greater consistency across different circuit types.

Oscar Piastri’s Madrid qualifying session ultimately tells the story of a Saturday that could have ended very differently. The underlying pace was there and Lando Norris proved the potential of the McLaren, but Piastri’s decisive lap was not strong enough when the pressure reached its peak.
Yet the weekend is far from over. Tyre degradation, incidents and the unpredictable nature of a brand-new circuit could still open opportunities that were not available during qualifying. If Piastri can recover the rhythm that deserted him in Q3, Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix offers an immediate chance to turn qualifying disappointment into a recovery drive.
