The Australian must reverse the trend from Las Vegas
From holding the World Championship in his hands after Zandvoort following a technical DNF at Zandvoort, to no longer being in control of his own destiny with three races — and a Sprint — remaining: for Oscar Piastri, the Las Vegas Grand Prix represents a last call to truly fight for the World Championship until the final corner. The Australian driver is 24 points behind his teammate Lando Norris, who by consistently finishing second would maintain a 2-point lead over Piastri.
On the eve of the Nevada event, Oscar Piastri stressed that looking back doesn’t help: “Obviously, it wasn’t nice to see the good advantage I had in the standings disappear, but looking back and thinking about the past doesn’t do any good,” said the McLaren driver. “I believe I have prepared well for this weekend, which will be very particular because the temperatures will be really low.”
Asked whether Lando Norris currently “has the McLaren in hand,” not just in terms of the car but also the team, Oscar Piastri replied: “No, simply the last few races have been difficult for me, but for reasons linked to my own performance, not the work, availability, or focus of McLaren, which has behaved exactly as it did in all the races where I performed well. It depended on me and it still depends on me.”
