Oscar Piastri may have fallen short in the 2025 Formula 1 drivers’ championship, but there is little debate that he remains one of the most compelling talents on the current grid. Despite missing out on the title, the Australian’s trajectory continues to point firmly upwards, underlining just how remarkable his rise has been in such a short space of time. It is easy to overlook the fact that Oscar Piastri has completed only three full seasons in Formula 1, yet he is already being discussed as a future world champion.
The McLaren driver has built an impressive record early in his career, having already secured nine Grand Prix victories. That tally leaves him just seven wins shy of Stirling Moss, the legendary British driver who still holds the record for the most Formula 1 victories without ever claiming a drivers’ championship. Finishing behind Lando Norris and Max Verstappen in the final standings of the 2025 season was not a failure by any stretch, but some fans questioned how McLaren managed its drivers during key moments of the campaign, with a perception that Piastri may not always have been fully prioritised.
Those circumstances inevitably fuelled speculation about Piastri’s long-term future in Formula 1. At just 24 years old, he has already been loosely linked with rival teams in the paddock, including Ferrari, prompting discussion over whether he might eventually explore other options. McLaren chief executive Zak Brown has consistently stated that his team believes it possesses the strongest driver pairing in the sport and has made no secret of his desire to keep the relationship between Norris and Piastri healthy as Formula 1 heads into a new technical era.
However, recent comments from Piastri himself appear to offer the clearest indication yet that he sees his future firmly aligned with McLaren. Speaking during an interview with Seven Sport at the most recent Ashes Test in Melbourne, the Australian reflected on his 2025 season and the progress he feels he made over the course of the year. He suggested that many moments from the campaign stood out as positive memories and explained that the level of confidence he gained in both his abilities and his overall approach was something he expected to carry with him throughout his career.
While acknowledging that there were areas where improvement was still needed, Piastri made it clear that both he and the team viewed those shortcomings as opportunities for growth rather than sources of frustration. He indicated that McLaren shared the belief that the lessons learned during the season would ultimately strengthen the entire organisation, adding that he was hopeful the team could enjoy many more successful years together in the future.
Piastri was also asked about his relationship with teammate Lando Norris, a dynamic that will continue to shape McLaren’s prospects in the seasons ahead. He made it clear that the working relationship between the two drivers remains strong, highlighting their ability to collaborate effectively while still pushing one another to improve. At the same time, he acknowledged that internal competition is inevitable at the highest level of the sport and suggested that he expects the pair to be fighting each other for championships over the coming years.
Attention then turned to the major regulation changes coming in 2026, a season that could redefine the competitive order in Formula 1. When questioned about whether missing out on the 2025 title had added pressure heading into the new era, Piastri indicated that his mindset was driven more by motivation than anxiety. He explained that while he was looking forward to a brief period away from racing to recharge, he was already focused on the significant challenges that lie ahead.
Piastri pointed out that the upcoming changes to both the cars and the power units will demand a steep learning curve for everyone on the grid. With so many unknowns, he acknowledged that it is impossible to predict exactly how teams will perform when the lights go out for the first race under the new rules. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence in the people around him at McLaren and stressed that the self-belief he developed during the 2025 season would be invaluable regardless of how competitive the car proves to be.
There is already growing support within the paddock for the idea that Piastri could be a genuine title contender next season, although much will depend on McLaren’s ability to deliver a consistently competitive package. What is clear, however, is that the Australian is improving at an exceptional rate, making it increasingly difficult to define the limits of his potential.
Lando Norris is acutely aware of the threat posed by his teammate, having experienced firsthand just how formidable Piastri can be over a full season. After securing his first world championship in Abu Dhabi, Norris now faces the challenge of responding to another internal title push from a driver who appears more confident, more complete and more committed than ever. As McLaren prepares for a new chapter in Formula 1, Oscar Piastri’s comments strongly suggest that he intends to be at the heart of that journey for many years to come.
