Oscar Piastri’s Singapore Grand Prix Sprint ended early after the McLaren driver crashed and was forced to retire at Marina Bay. Rather than focusing on the result he had lost, however, Piastri said his main disappointment was the additional work now facing his mechanics as they prepare the car for the rest of the weekend.
The accident brought Piastri’s Sprint to a premature end during a demanding Saturday at Marina Bay, where the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix is being run as a Sprint weekend. The compact format leaves teams with limited time between sessions, making accident damage particularly costly.
Oscar Piastri reacts to Singapore Sprint crash
Speaking to Sky Sport F1 after his retirement, Oscar Piastri explained that he had not yet had an opportunity to review the incident in detail.
“I haven’t had a chance to look back at what happened yet. From what I felt, losing a fourth or fifth place isn’t what weighs on me the most.”
“I’m especially sorry for the mechanics, who now have to work to put the car back together.”
Piastri therefore appeared less concerned about the points that had slipped away than about the consequences of the accident for the McLaren crew. With Grand Prix qualifying still to come later on Saturday, the mechanics face an important repair job before the next competitive session.
McLaren faces repair work before Singapore qualifying
The timing of the accident is particularly inconvenient during a Sprint weekend, when the schedule offers far less recovery time than a conventional Grand Prix format. Saturday at Marina Bay includes both the Sprint and qualifying for Sunday’s race, increasing the pressure on teams to complete repairs quickly.
The Singapore weekend has already been disrupted by heavy rain, with Grand Prix qualifying pushed back by 30 minutes after the delayed Sprint. The extra time gives McLaren a little more breathing room, but the team still has to assess and repair Piastri’s car before he can return to action.
For Oscar Piastri, the immediate priority is therefore not the missed fourth or fifth place he believed may have been available, but ensuring the car is ready for qualifying and the main Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday.
