Oscar Piastri has delivered his clearest statement yet regarding his Formula 1 future, insisting that he has no intention of leaving McLaren despite the growing rumours surrounding the 2027 driver market. Speaking during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Australian addressed the speculation that has linked him to a potential seat swap involving Max Verstappen and made it clear that he sees his future remaining in Woking.

Piastri and Webber send the same message

First it was his manager, former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, and now Oscar Piastri himself has publicly dismissed the rumours. If their comments are to be taken at face value, McLaren’s driver line-up is expected to remain unchanged for 2027, with both Piastri and Lando Norris continuing under their long-term contracts.

Over the past few weeks, speculation has suggested a possible seat swap between Piastri and Max Verstappen. The theory was based on performance-related clauses reportedly included in their respective contracts, which could potentially allow either driver to leave their current team under certain circumstances.

While Verstappen’s frustration with Red Bull has become increasingly evident throughout the season, another key ingredient for such a move now appears to be missing: any desire on Piastri’s part to leave McLaren.

After Webber publicly backed McLaren as the Australian’s long-term home, Piastri reinforced that message during an interview on the BBC’s Chequered Flag Extra podcast recorded at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

“I know I’ll stay here”

Unlike Verstappen, who has often avoided giving definitive answers when asked about his future, Piastri responded directly when questioned about the ongoing rumours.

“For me, the important thing is to focus on doing my job,” the Australian said. “I know I’ll be staying here for a while, and I know the team is happy with me. I’m happy with the team as well, and the relationship is good. So, for me, it’s just talk, and it’s not my job to worry about it.”

Those comments leave little room for interpretation and appear to close the door, at least publicly, on the idea of Piastri leaving McLaren in the near future.

What does it mean for Verstappen?

Of course, Formula 1 has repeatedly shown that today’s public statements can quickly be overtaken by tomorrow’s developments. Drivers, teams and team principals have often denied negotiations only for major transfers to be confirmed shortly afterwards.

Even so, Piastri’s remarks were unusually firm, raising an obvious question: if there were a realistic possibility of changing teams, why make such a strong public commitment?

If McLaren’s line-up remains unchanged, the options surrounding Max Verstappen’s future become considerably narrower. Based on the current landscape, the four-time world champion may ultimately face only two realistic paths: remaining at Red Bull despite his frustrations or stepping away from Formula 1 altogether.

Whether such a departure, if it ever happened, would be temporary or permanent is something only Verstappen himself can answer. For now, however, Oscar Piastri has made one thing abundantly clear—he expects to remain a McLaren driver for the foreseeable future.
