Lance Stroll handed 10-place grid penalty after fifth power unit installation
The FIA has officially confirmed that Lance Stroll will serve a 10-place grid penalty for the 2026 British Grand Prix after Aston Martin installed a fifth power unit on his car, exceeding the maximum allocation permitted under Formula 1 regulations.
The penalty will have very little practical impact on Stroll’s starting position. After qualifying near the back of the field, the Canadian was already set to line up 21st on the grid. With the 10-place drop applied, he will officially start 22nd for Sunday’s race at Silverstone.
The stewards issued the decision after receiving a report from the FIA Technical Delegate, confirming that Aston Martin had fitted a fifth power unit component beyond the number allowed during the season. As a result, the standard 10-place grid penalty was automatically applied in accordance with the Sporting Regulations.
While the sanction changes Lance Stroll’s official grid position, it is unlikely to significantly affect his race strategy, as he was already expected to start from the rear of the field. Aston Martin will now hope that the fresh power unit can at least provide a performance and reliability advantage during the British Grand Prix, allowing Stroll to recover positions over the course of the race.
