Nigel Mansell supports Cadillac’s pursuit of Sergio Perez for Formula 1 debut. Sergio Perez is nearing a deal to become Cadillac’s first Formula 1 driver for 2026..

Sergio Perez, Red Bull 2024

Sergio Perez appears to be getting closer to signing with the future Formula 1 team Cadillac, and for a former Formula 1 driver, this would be the correct strategic move.

After several months of negotiations, rumors, and behind-the-scenes discussions, the first official announcement concerning the 2026 Formula 1 season is expected to be released soon. According to multiple sources, Sergio Perez is reportedly close to becoming the first officially confirmed driver for the Cadillac Formula 1 project, which is set to mark the debut of the American manufacturer on the Formula 1 grid.

This decision is the result of long and thorough evaluations conducted by the management of the upcoming eleventh team on the grid. The aim is clearly to arrive at the start of the 2026 season as prepared as possible, in order to avoid struggling and falling behind from the very first races of the championship.

Cadillac’s driver choice continues to earn approval

Even 1992 Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell has weighed in on the topic of Sergio Perez and the potential collaboration with Cadillac. The British former driver discussed the pros and cons of a possible agreement between the experienced Mexican driver and the new American team.
“Sergio Perez certainly deserves another opportunity in Formula 1,” said Nigel Mansell. “He is a driver with a vast amount of experience and has played a crucial role in helping Max Verstappen win his World Championships over the past seasons. As for Cadillac, I hope there are smart people behind the scenes who are capable of understanding what the right strategy should be.”

Mansell further emphasized the importance of experienced feedback during the initial development phase of a new Formula 1 team. “During their debut season, it will be absolutely essential to rely on driver feedback to understand what is working and what needs to be improved. That’s why they must have individuals who know what they’re doing. Otherwise, there’s a serious risk of spending large amounts of money without ever becoming truly competitive,” explained the former Williams driver in an interview with the German outlet Wettfreunde.

Cadillac’s potential signing of Sergio Perez is increasingly being seen as a wise and calculated move. With his wealth of experience, technical knowledge, and background in developing competitive machinery—particularly in his supportive role alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull Racing—Perez could provide Cadillac with precisely the level of insight and leadership they need as they enter the intensely competitive world of Formula 1.

The decision could help the General Motors-backed project avoid many of the common pitfalls new teams face when entering Formula 1, especially as the sport undergoes major regulation changes starting in 2026. With strategic planning, experienced personnel, and a seasoned driver like Sergio Perez, Cadillac may set itself up for a more stable and productive debut than many might expect from a newcomer.
