Lando Norris faced a challenging and disappointing Belgian Grand Prix, and former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg did not miss the opportunity to publicly compare the young McLaren driver with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg’s comments raised serious doubts about whether Norris is truly ready to compete at the highest level for a Formula 1 World Championship title.
For the 2016 world champion, the mistakes Norris made during the race would have been unthinkable for a driver of Lewis Hamilton’s caliber and experience in a championship battle.
Hamilton vs. Norris: A Weighty Comparison
Despite securing an impressive pole position and opting for a different race strategy than his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris’s race was compromised by three crucial errors at decisive moments. Norris lost his leading position to Piastri already on the first lap under green flag conditions, and further lost valuable time during the pit stops by staying one extra lap on worn intermediate tires.
His late-race comeback on the more durable hard compound tires showed promise, as he steadily reduced the gap to the race leader by several tenths per lap. However, three key incidents held him back: a significant mistake at the fast Pouhon corner and two separate lock-ups at the tight La Source hairpin. These errors, documented in the official race report, were considered too many for a driver aspiring to fight for the top championship spot.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Nico Rosberg delivered a candid and stern assessment of Norris’s performance. “Lando said it felt like one qualifying lap after another and that he pushed the car to its limit,” Rosberg explained, but he added, “And in doing so, he made a lot of mistakes. I just wonder: would someone like Lewis Hamilton have made three mistakes like that? I’m not so sure.”
The former Mercedes driver highlighted the crucial difference between pushing flat out and maintaining the composure and calmness typical of great champions. “If you’re pushing hard like crazy in a race like that, you also have to keep your cool. When it’s ‘Hammer Time’ for Hamilton, I’m not sure he would have made those three errors.”
The Hamilton Comparison: A Heavy Burden but Inevitable
While the comparison to Lewis Hamilton may seem daunting for a young driver like Norris, it is almost unavoidable when discussing serious title ambitions. The internal competition within McLaren is intense, with both Norris and Oscar Piastri showing strong performances. Norris clearly still has room to grow.
However, if Lando Norris wants to silence critics like Rosberg—and perhaps his own doubts—he will need to reverse this trend quickly, starting with the upcoming race. Only consistent, mistake-free performances will convince the Formula 1 community that he can truly challenge for the World Championship in the near future.
