Nico Hülkenberg, a stellar performance
When Kick Sauber signed Nico Hülkenberg, the decision by the Hinwil-based team was immediately applauded, as the German would bring experience and reliability to a struggling outfit that had been waiting too passively for Audi’s arrival.
Few, however, expected Hülkenberg to be in such sparkling form, managing to finish ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari in Spain and scoring points in no fewer than three out of ten weekends.
The numbers
Nico Hülkenberg is one of the sharpest performers on the grid, and the numbers back it up: excluding those competing in their own separate league, the German ranks fourth, behind only Alex Albon, Esteban Ocon, and Isack Hadjar. And the one most thankful is the Swiss team itself: the 20 points brought home by #87 across ten race weekends equal the total haul of Kick Sauber from both the 2023 season (16 points) and the 2024 championship so far (4 points).
Gabriel Bortoleto still on zero
Nico Hülkenberg’s impact is also evident when compared to Gabriel Bortoleto. The Brazilian is still on zero points: nevertheless, the team is satisfied with his performances, given that he’s a rookie paired with a tough teammate. Since Kick Sauber introduced its first major upgrade package (Barcelona), signs of progress have been seen from the reigning F2 champion, who is now targeting his first F1 point.
