Nico Hulkenberg began the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season exactly as he ended the first: by scoring points for Audi. The German finished eighth at the Dutch Grand Prix after producing several impressive overtakes and showing encouraging race pace, strengthening his belief that Audi is moving in the right direction.
It was another important result for a team that is still working to improve its overall performance. Nico Hulkenberg’s race at Zandvoort began with a major scare when he narrowly avoided being caught up in an opening-lap incident involving team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto, but from that point onwards the afternoon developed far more positively.
Nico Hulkenberg sees clear signs of Audi progress
Once the opening-lap drama was behind him, Nico Hulkenberg was able to settle into the race and make the most of an effective strategy from Audi. Strong pace and several on-track battles eventually carried him to eighth place, giving the team another valuable points finish as it continues its development programme.
For Nico Hulkenberg, the result was particularly satisfying because it came at the end of a weekend that had not always been straightforward. The points also provided another indication that the work being carried out by Audi is beginning to translate into stronger results on track.
“It was a really good race, although the end of the first lap was pretty scary. I saw what was happening in front of me and reacted instinctively, so I was relieved to avoid the accident,” Nico Hulkenberg said.
“From there onwards, we had a clean race, a good strategy and some nice battles along the way. It’s a really good feeling to go home with points today.”
Dutch GP points give Audi another boost
Nico Hulkenberg stressed that the importance of the result extends beyond his own eighth-place finish. Every point matters for Audi in the championship, while another competitive performance provides encouragement for the entire team as it continues working to close the gap to its rivals.
“They are important for us in the championship and give the whole team a boost, while also confirming that the work we’re doing is taking us in the right direction,” Nico Hulkenberg explained.
“It wasn’t an easy weekend, so it’s even nicer to go home with a good result and some valuable points today.”
Nico Hulkenberg and Audi now turn attention to Monza
Audi will now look to carry that momentum into the Italian Grand Prix, although Monza will present a very different technical challenge from Zandvoort. The high-speed characteristics of the Italian circuit will provide another opportunity to assess how far the team has progressed as the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season develops.
For now, however, Nico Hulkenberg’s eighth place offers further encouragement. After surviving the opening-lap scare and converting Audi’s race pace into another points finish, the German believes the team’s current development path is producing the right signs.
