The recently concluded season was undoubtedly one of the most exciting and unpredictable in recent years. Amid the McLaren-Ferrari battle for the Constructors’ Championship and the Lando Norris – Max Verstappen rivalry for the Drivers’ title, the “perfect” driver of 2024 turned out to be someone else.
Looking at the statistics of the season now drawing to a close, there’s one particular fact that stands out and warrants attention. Behind McLaren’s success, it wasn’t just Lando Norris or Andrea Stella making the difference—another factor played a key role.
The “Perfect” Driver of 2024
Oscar Piastri, at times criticized for being outshone by his teammate, was the only driver to complete all 1,444 laps of the championship. While this statistic doesn’t directly impact the standings, it highlights the consistency demonstrated by the Australian driver and his team, which helped secure a Constructors’ title that had eluded McLaren for many years.
Under Andrea Stella’s leadership, McLaren had the fastest car from the Miami Grand Prix onward. Despite some mistakes during the year, the team managed to edge out Ferrari in a duel that remained undecided until the final laps in Abu Dhabi.
The sense is that 2025 will be an even more balanced championship than the one just concluded, with Ferrari relying on the Charles Leclerc – Lewis Hamilton duo to end a title drought that has lasted over fifteen years.
