Andrea Kimi Antonelli could become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, but Mercedes has played down the likelihood of the Italian securing the 2026 title this weekend. Deputy team principal Bradley Lord believes the probability of Antonelli wrapping up the championship in Texas is approximately one in 25, making talk of an early title match point premature.
Antonelli’s third-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix brought the historic achievement within mathematical reach. However, the championship picture remains complicated by uncertainty surrounding the final two rounds originally scheduled in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, with the possibility of Imola replacing those events potentially changing the title-winning calculations.
Kimi Antonelli has a chance to win the F1 title in Austin
Following his podium finish in Singapore last Sunday, Andrea Kimi Antonelli heads to Austin with the possibility of becoming the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history.
The Mercedes driver will have a mathematical opportunity to secure the championship regardless of the eventual decision concerning the final two races on the original 2026 calendar, both scheduled to take place in the Middle East.
Whether Formula 1 proceeds as planned with the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix or those two rounds are cancelled and replaced by a race at Imola, Antonelli will still have a scenario in which he can settle the championship at the United States Grand Prix.
However, the combinations of results required would change considerably depending on whether six or five rounds remain on the calendar.
That distinction is particularly important because the number of available championship points determines how large an advantage Antonelli needs to establish before he can be mathematically crowned champion.
Mercedes refuses to treat Austin as a genuine title match point
Despite the excitement surrounding Antonelli’s opportunity, Mercedes is reluctant to discuss the potential championship-winning scenarios.
At the team’s Brackley headquarters, the working assumption remains that the 2026 Formula 1 season will conclude in Abu Dhabi rather than Imola. Under that scenario, Antonelli’s chances of clinching the championship in Austin are considered extremely small.
Bradley Lord, Mercedes’ deputy team principal, made the team’s position clear during the latest episode of the NU Silver Arrows Radio Show, the discussion programme published on Mercedes’ official YouTube channel.
Lord believes describing Austin as Antonelli’s first championship match point, borrowing terminology from tennis, creates a misleading impression of how close the title is to being decided.
Bradley Lord estimates Antonelli’s Austin title chances at 1 in 25
“We’re going through that rather awkward phase of the season where, during the Thursday media sessions, everyone asks you: ‘Hey, you could do it! You’ve got your first match point!'” Bradley Lord explained.
“People really like this tennis comparison of ‘match points’, and yet I think the probability of it actually happening in Austin is about one in 25.
“So I would suggest we rule that subject out of both the questions we’re going to be asked and the answers we’re going to give.”
The estimate represents a probability of approximately four per cent, illustrating why Mercedes is unwilling to present the United States Grand Prix as a likely championship-deciding event.
For Antonelli, who is known to be superstitious, the team’s cautious approach is unlikely to be unwelcome. Although the championship could theoretically be settled in Texas, Mercedes clearly prefers to concentrate on the immediate racing challenge rather than the various mathematical combinations that might deliver an early coronation.
Qatar and Abu Dhabi uncertainty could change Antonelli’s title calculations
The situation may be less encouraging for Imola, however, because Mercedes’ reasoning appears to assume that Formula 1 intends to proceed with the scheduled Middle Eastern races despite the threat of conflict affecting the region.
The original calendar includes the Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina, but uncertainty over those events has created an alternative scenario in which Imola could host the season finale.
Any change to the number of remaining Grands Prix would directly affect the points calculations and therefore the results Antonelli needs to secure the championship.
If both Middle Eastern rounds proceed as scheduled, Mercedes believes the probability of an Austin title celebration remains minimal. If the calendar is shortened, the championship mathematics would change, potentially making an early title victory more achievable.
For now, the team is preparing on the assumption that the season will end in Abu Dhabi, leaving Antonelli with only a remote chance of claiming the crown at the Circuit of the Americas.
Antonelli’s historic F1 opportunity remains within reach
Although Mercedes is discouraging speculation about an immediate championship celebration, Antonelli’s position remains remarkable.
His Singapore podium has ensured that he arrives at the United States Grand Prix with a mathematical opportunity to become Formula 1’s youngest world champion, even if the precise combinations required depend on how the remainder of the calendar is resolved.
The difference between having a theoretical chance and facing a genuine match point is central to Mercedes’ position. Bradley Lord’s estimate suggests the team views an Austin title as possible but highly improbable under the calendar scenario it currently expects.
For Antonelli, the priority will therefore be another strong result in Texas. Whether that proves sufficient to settle the championship or merely brings him closer to his first world title will depend both on his performance and on how the remaining races of the 2026 season unfold.
