F1 | Mercedes arrives in the Netherlands with a historic innovation: sustainability takes center stage
The Mercedes team is heading into the Dutch Grand Prix with a groundbreaking innovation, marking another significant step toward sustainability. While there are no technical updates to the car itself, the German team is making history in Formula 1 by being the first ever to transport its race cars to a Grand Prix using an electric truck.
Mercedes has consistently emphasized sustainability, previously forming partnerships focused on tree planting and ecosystem protection. This latest initiative highlights the team’s commitment to concentrating resources on minimizing emissions over the coming years.
Details of Mercedes’ sustainability initiative
As highlighted, Mercedes is the first F1 team to embrace sustainable transport by using electric vehicles. The journey started from Brackley, the team’s headquarters in the UK, and covered a total of 673 kilometers to Zandvoort. The vehicle used, a Mercedes eActros 600, produces 80% fewer emissions compared to a conventional diesel truck over its full lifecycle.
This project is part of a broader plan aiming for zero emissions by 2030. The deployment of these electric trucks demonstrates the team’s dedication to diversifying sustainable resource use, with the goal of extending this practice to other European races and reinforcing Formula 1’s reputation as “the fastest laboratory in the world.”
The Mercedes eActros 600 is equipped with a 600 kWh battery and provides a minimum range of 500 kilometers per charge. Its charging system is highly efficient, allowing the battery to go from 20% to 80% in just 25 minutes—an essential feature for meeting the precise timing and logistical demands of Formula 1 operations.
Team perspectives
Alice Ashpitel, head of Mercedes’ sustainability project, emphasized the team’s vision: “We continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with battery-electric trucks. Our collaboration with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team is key in demonstrating that long-distance sustainable transport has finally arrived with our eActros 600. We could not be more thrilled that one of our trucks has been used to transport the team’s W16 cars from Brackley to Zandvoort.”
She added, “We are extremely proud to showcase the impressive range and capabilities of this truck. It proves that the era of electrification is now here and that range anxiety is no longer a concern.”
It is also worth noting that, in 2024, the team was able to cover 98% of its commercial and race fleet using biofuel. This operation alone saved 500 tons of CO2 during the European leg of last season, reinforcing Mercedes’ ongoing commitment to sustainable practices in motorsport.
