For Mercedes, the Qatar Grand Prix was a fast weekend but full of challenges. Simone Resta commented on the Silver Arrows’ performance, highlighting a complex picture for George Russell and the team. While Mercedes appeared competitive in the sprint, consistency was lacking in the main race. “We lost pace at the end and some important points,” Simone Resta explained. The team believes they have a strong base but need greater continuity. The car performs well at times, but not throughout the entire weekend.
Russell’s issues in Las Vegas and Qatar: concerns for Abu Dhabi?
Simone Resta focused on the problems affecting George Russell, clarifying that there is no link to the Las Vegas failure. “In Vegas it was an interaction with the power steering. In Qatar it was just a driving feeling.”
The Qatar circuit has extremely fast corners that put heavy load on the steering. Russell noticed a slight asymmetry in the wheel’s response. However, as the laps went by, he adapted and completed the GP without further anomalies. The team does not see any structural issues, so the problems are not expected to recur at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Not an easy race for Russell
Simone Resta also reconstructed George Russell’s difficult start. The driver began from P4 on a dirtier part of the grid. “We were worried about lack of grip, and indeed there was wheelspin. You lose too much downforce in the fast corners, and the DRS is short. During the double pit stop we lost seconds with Kimi and had to slow George down.”
The team lost valuable time and positions. Mercedes is now working to execute a perfect pit stop in Abu Dhabi. Despite the frustration, Simone Resta remains optimistic. Mercedes has shown a strong level of competitiveness in recent races. “We can have a strong weekend and consolidate our objective in the constructors’ championship.”
Russell aiming for a strong finish
George Russell wants to end the year on a high note. The team believes they have the pace to fight back in Abu Dhabi. The final race will be a true test of redemption.
