Mercedes boss Toto Wolff plays down Qatar chances despite big F1 constructors’ cushion. Toto Wolff insists Mercedes cannot relax.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal 2024

Mercedes holds a 40-point advantage over Red Bull

Mercedes extended its lead over Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship with a double podium in Las Vegas. The Brackley team now holds a 40-point advantage over Milton Keynes, meaning that barring any dramatic surprises, Mercedes should be able to secure second place in the Constructors’ standings by performing steadily in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Toto Wolff sets expectations for Lusail

However, Team Principal Toto Wolff prefers not to take anything for granted ahead of the Lusail weekend. “We have a good lead in the Constructors’ standings, but we don’t take anything for granted. Even though we gained points on our direct rivals in Las Vegas, the weekend also showed how quickly things can change. As a team, we did a good job, and we are focused on repeating that performance in both Doha and Abu Dhabi,” Toto Wolff said.

“Getting off to a strong start in FP1 and having a solid base to build from will be crucial during a Sprint weekend,” Toto Wolff added. “We expect our rivals to be fast. Hot conditions and high-speed corners haven’t been our strongest points this year, so we will aim to maximize the package we have available.”

With only the Qatar and Abu Dhabi rounds remaining, Mercedes know that even a single mechanical failure, penalty or off-track moment could reopen the door for Red Bull and Ferrari. Toto Wolff’s message is clear: the fight for P2 is still very much alive.
