Even the fiercest rival can leave a void, and those are the words of Toto Wolff. The Mercedes team principal, famous for his long and intense battles with Christian Horner, has never hidden the hostility and competitive tension that defined their relationship. Christian Horner, until recently team principal of Red Bull Racing, was unexpectedly dismissed, a move that shocked the entire Formula 1 paddock. Wolff, with his usual mix of irony and sharpness, did not miss the chance to comment on the matter.
“What do I think about it? Well, that he has behaved like an a*****e quite often in the last twelve to fifteen years,” stated Toto Wolff when asked about Horner’s departure from the team that he had led for almost two decades. “He acts according to completely different values, but even the worst enemy can also be a kind of best friend. On the other hand, he has achieved enormous success in what he has done. Now that he is gone, at least for a while, I cannot hide that his absence is felt. A great personality has left this sport.”
The farewell, at least temporary, of Christian Horner to Formula 1 appears to have struck a chord with the Mercedes boss, who even paid him an unusual tribute. Wolff admitted: “He was controversial and divisive, but he was one of the main characters here. We can safely say that he was as important as a driver. His opinions always carried significant weight.”
A rivalry written into Formula 1 history
The rivalry between Toto Wolff and Christian Horner is one of the most famous in modern Formula 1, reaching its absolute peak in the 2021 season. That year was dominated by the dramatic and controversial championship battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, a season-long duel that went down to the very last race in Abu Dhabi. It was a double rivalry, not only between drivers but also between the two team principals who represented their respective empires.
Reflecting on that period, Wolff admitted: “Those years, but especially 2021, were not only about Max and Lewis, but also about Christian and me. At times it was really difficult, and that is now written in all the history books and it will remain there forever. You know, he always said that I liked to hate him. So who should I hate now? It seems I will have to find someone else,” joked Wolff, underlining how much the rivalry itself had become part of his own racing life.
The possible return of Christian Horner
Christian Horner’s departure from Formula 1, however, does not appear to be definitive. Many within the paddock are already speculating about his future. Several teams and new projects are said to be interested in his services, given his vast experience and proven track record. Names circulating include Alpine, which is undergoing a difficult phase and could benefit from an experienced leader, and Cadillac, which is preparing its entry into Formula 1 in 2026 and would undoubtedly value a manager of Horner’s stature to establish credibility and competitiveness.
For this reason, many observers believe that Christian Horner will not stay away from Formula 1 for long. The second half of the current championship might already bring more clarity about where he could land, and whether his celebrated “frenemy” relationship with Toto Wolff will continue in new circumstances.
Wolff, despite his cutting remarks, left no doubt that the absence of such a combative and influential figure changes the balance of Formula 1. The Mercedes boss, while enjoying Red Bull’s internal troubles from a competitive standpoint, recognizes that without Horner, the sport loses one of its central characters, someone who shaped storylines, rivalries, and the very narrative of modern Formula 1.
The big question remains: will Christian Horner return to the Formula 1 paddock in the near future, and if so, in which role? And when that happens, will Toto Wolff once again have the rival he both despised and, in his own way, valued?
