Andrea Kimi Antonelli is approaching his official Formula 1 debut, the 2006-born driver who will replace the legendary Lewis Hamilton. Naturally, all eyes will be on the young Italian, with many critics ready to tear him down at the first sign of a mistake.
Kimi Antonelli shouldn’t think that Toto Wolff hired him to directly replace Hamilton. If the Austrian manager had wanted to replace a seven-time world champion with a more experienced driver, the market offered more seasoned professionals than the Italian. Instead, Toto places great faith in the former Prema driver, believing him to be the new Verstappen (it’s well known that Wolff still regrets not signing Max ten years ago).
That said, if Mercedes can maintain the performance they showed in the final races of the season, Antonelli has a real chance to fight for top positions right away, possibly replicating Oscar Piastri’s debut season, where he achieved podium finishes with McLaren, or even Hamilton’s first F1 season, where he nearly won the championship, thanks in part to the quality of his car.
Helmut Marko, an expert on young talent, has expressed his opinion on Antonelli’s move to Mercedes, calling it a risky one but offering advice to the young Italian on how to handle his first F1 season.
Antonelli Reminds Marko of the Risk Taken with Verstappen
About ten years ago, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko was captivated by Max Verstappen’s talent and did everything he could to secure him a Formula 1 seat at just 17 years old. Many considered this bet a bit reckless, but in hindsight, it proved to be a winning move, and now Max has become a cornerstone of the team at Milton Keynes.
Kimi Antonelli’s signing reminds Marko of the risk taken with Max Verstappen, though the Austrian points out an important difference: “Antonelli is a risk. But we also took that risk with Max. He was younger when he arrived in F1. However, he wasn’t in a top team, so there was less pressure on Max.” Indeed, the four-time world champion began his F1 career with Toro Rosso, Red Bull’s satellite team, before moving to the main team the following season.
Marko’s Advice: Avoid the Aggression Seen at Monza
The Friday of the 2024 Monza weekend was particularly exciting for the Italian public with Antonelli’s F1 debut. However, the excitement turned negative after just a few kilometers due to an error by the 18-year-old at the Parabolica. Despite this, he showed impressive speed, though the rush of excitement likely led him to push too hard.
According to Marko, if Antonelli maintains this aggressive approach, his F1 career could be at risk, especially given that he currently has only one year of contract with Mercedes. “If he can skillfully leverage his existing strengths and speed, building up gradually, he can become a threat. If he tries to force things, I think his career could be in danger,” the Austrian advisor states. Indeed, with a lower-mid-tier team, Antonelli would have had the chance to gain experience and grow with the relative calm that the ruthless world of F1 can sometimes offer.
According to Toto Wolff’s plans, 2025 should be a transitional year for Antonelli in preparation for 2026, when the new regulations will take effect. However, it is clear that the Italian will need to prove he deserves his place at Mercedes, but he can certainly count on a team accustomed to winning, and on Toto Wolff, who is very fond of him and taking many risks by entrusting Kimi with the Mercedes seat.
