There is a moment in every season when a team must decide whether to accept reality or try to bend it to its will. McLaren has arrived exactly at that point: between a start to the campaign that does not resemble a world champion and a chase that feels more like an obligation than a hope. Lando Norris’ words are not a shout, nor a defence. They are the calm statement of someone who refuses to accept that 2026 is already written. The team speaks about a power unit that needs to be understood, about work still to be refined, and about gaps that weigh more than expected.
But beneath the surface, there is something else, something not openly said: the feeling that this season can still change direction, if only they manage to rediscover the thread that brought them this far. And that every race from now on matters more than it may seem.
A complicated start, but Norris refuses the idea of giving up
Lando Norris said it with the calmness of someone who does not want to create noise, but also does not want to leave room for misunderstanding: McLaren will not abandon its title defence. Not now, not like this. The start of the season has revealed a car that is still difficult to decode, a 2026 power unit that is not responding as it should, and a series of setbacks that slowed the campaign before it could even find its rhythm. The double retirement in China — the second consecutive one for Oscar Piastri — had raised the worst fears.
The Australian’s podium in Japan restored some order, but not enough: McLaren is third in the Constructors’ Championship, already 89 points behind Mercedes. A gap that hurts, even if nobody admits it openly.
Norris, who finished fifth at Suzuka, acknowledged that the team «is not where it wants to be». But he also drew a clear line: there is no talk of 2027, no talk of giving up:
“We still want to fight with everything we’ve got for the championship; it’s not about giving up and focusing on next year – I’m not sure that approach really works.”
His words are not just a message to the paddock, but an internal reminder: McLaren has already lived through difficult starts and turned them into momentum. In 2023 and 2024, when everything seemed lost, the team found a way to recover. It is a memory that carries as much weight as any technical data.
Trust in the McLaren method: “We know how to make a comeback”
Norris speaks like someone who knows his team from the inside, with its limits and its obsessions:
“We’ve been through this before, we’ve done it, we’ve learned from it and I’m convinced this team knows how to do it again. There is a lot of hard work ahead, but we are ready to face it.”
This is not a motivational speech: it is a statement of identity. McLaren does not see 2026 as a transition year, and does not want it to become one. The situation is not disastrous, but it requires an immediate response, continuous and almost stubborn:
“We need to get to work to get back in the fight for wins and make sure we have a car capable of winning every single weekend.”
The power unit remains the most delicate issue: a new, complex engine that has slowed down the understanding of the car. But at Woking, there is belief that the learning curve can still bend in the right direction. It is confidence that does not come from chance, but from the memory of what they have already been capable of achieving.
Norris does not want 2026 to become a suspended year, just as McLaren does not want 2027 to become an escape route. The next races will show whether this conviction is realistic or whether the season risks slipping away.
For now, one certainty remains: McLaren does not give up.
In summary, Lando Norris’s defiant stance confirms that McLaren is not ready to let the 2026 season slip away. By rejecting a premature focus on 2027, the team is banking on its proven ability to out-develop rivals mid-season. The upcoming races will determine if this conviction is grounded in reality or if the championship is destined to move out of reach.
