Oscar Piastri has revealed just how impressed he was after experiencing the Isle of Man TT for the first time, taking advantage of a break in the Formula 1 calendar before the Monaco Grand Prix to witness one of motorsport’s most extreme and spectacular events.
The McLaren driver attended the qualifying sessions alongside his manager and mentor Mark Webber, watching the action from one of the most iconic sections of the legendary circuit. Photos and videos shared on social media quickly showed Piastri’s astonished reaction as motorcycles blasted past at incredible speeds. It was an experience the Australian later described as completely different from anything he had encountered during his racing career.
Oscar Piastri discovers the Isle of Man TT
For the first time, Piastri immersed himself in the unique atmosphere of the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, a world far removed from the highly controlled environment of Formula 1.
Accompanied by Mark Webber, the McLaren driver visited several famous points around the course, including the iconic Bray Hill section. Standing just metres from the road, the pair watched riders fly through public streets bordered by houses, walls and fences at astonishing speeds.
The proximity to the action offered a perspective that few Formula 1 drivers ever experience, highlighting just how different motorcycle road racing is from modern Grand Prix competition.
Bray Hill leaves a lasting impression
One of the most memorable moments for Piastri came at Bray Hill, one of the most famous and dangerous sections of the Isle of Man TT circuit.
The McLaren driver watched from a private garden located directly alongside the road, with motorcycles charging downhill at breathtaking speed and virtually no run-off area in sight. From that vantage point, Piastri was able to appreciate just how small the margin for error is in the event, with riders skimming past walls and fences by mere centimetres. The experience offered a stark reminder of the courage and precision required to compete in one of the world’s most demanding motorsport competitions.
The “perfect spot” to watch the action
Piastri documented part of the experience on social media, showing himself squeezing through narrow openings between fences and private gardens to reach the viewing area.
In one of the videos, he could be heard expressing his amazement at the location, describing it as “the perfect spot” to watch the action unfold. While filming, he pointed out that he was effectively standing in somebody’s garden while motorcycles raced past just a few metres away at full speed. The footage quickly gained attention among motorsport fans, many of whom enjoyed seeing a Formula 1 driver react to the unique spectacle of the Isle of Man TT.
“These guys are crazy”
The most memorable moment came when a group of motorcycles thundered past at full speed just a short distance away.
Piastri followed the riders with his eyes and reacted instantly, visibly shocked by both the speed and the level of risk involved. Unable to hide his astonishment, he delivered the line that quickly became the defining quote of the video: “These guys are crazy.”
The spontaneous reaction perfectly captured what many first-time spectators feel when witnessing the Isle of Man TT in person.
Mark Webber reflects on the experience
Mark Webber also shared his thoughts on social media, explaining that it is always fascinating to accompany someone attending the event for the first time.
The former Formula 1 driver highlighted the extraordinary bravery required by the competitors and emphasized how impressive the spectacle remains, even for people who have spent their entire careers around elite-level motorsport. Piastri clearly left the Isle of Man deeply impressed by what he had witnessed. Reflecting on the experience, he summed it up with a message that suggests he will be back in the future.
“First experience at the TT. It won’t be the last,” he wrote.
For a driver who has already competed at the highest level of motorsport, that statement says a great deal about the impact the Isle of Man TT had on him.
