The return of the champions: McLaren set to hit the track for the final three days of testing
The McLaren MCL40 is officially ready for its track debut. After taking a calculated break during the first two days of the ongoing shakedown tests in Barcelona, the reigning Constructors’ Champions—who also boast current Drivers’ Champion Lando Norris in their ranks—are finally preparing to get down to business. The Woking-based squad will take to the circuit starting tomorrow and will run through Friday, strategically utilizing the final three days of the five-day window allocated to the teams.
The “Papaya” team released an official statement at the conclusion of Tuesday’s running, explaining that they used the first two days—while other teams were already circulating—to meticulously “assemble and inspect” the entire car and its complex systems.
“With on-track testing for the 2026 season underway and driving time limited to just three days out of a five-day period, the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team has approached this week’s Barcelona Shakedown by taking full advantage of the program’s flexibility,” the statement read. “We plan to be on track for the final three days of testing, while the initial days offered an essential opportunity to assemble and check the entire car.”
This measured approach suggests that the team is prioritizing quality over quantity, ensuring that the MCL40 is perfectly prepared before Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri begin their defense of the titles won in 2025. With the eyes of the F1 world on the new 2026 regulations, the focus will be on the pit lane tomorrow morning to see if the world champions have once again produced a benchmark machine.
By strategically delaying their entry into the Barcelona shakedown, McLaren has emphasized a meticulous preparation process over early mileage, ensuring the MCL40 is fully optimized for its first public outing. As Lando Norris prepares to defend his crown starting tomorrow, the team’s confidence in their “assemble and check” phase suggests they are ready to maximize every second of their remaining three days on track. This deliberate start underscores the world champions’ disciplined approach as they enter the highly anticipated 2026 regulatory era.
