McLaren reviews strategy mistakes after F1 Qatar GP for Abu Dhabi finale. After a chaotic Qatar GP, McLaren launches an internal review.

McLaren MCL38, 2024

Following the chaotic Qatar Grand Prix, McLaren is undertaking an internal review to better understand strategic decisions that affected both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, raising more questions than answers ahead of the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

The British team is now grappling with a tactical error that heavily impacted the final results, prompting a detailed investigation into the decision-making processes on the pit wall. The central issue is to understand how a choice was made that left both drivers exposed and, according to team principal Andrea Stella, “significantly disadvantaged,” despite being in positions ideal for controlling the race.

An internal review

The process will involve key figures responsible for race strategy, with the goal of identifying any cognitive biases or misjudgments that may have influenced the calls made during the race.

A strategic misstep

Stella clearly explained the core of the problem, taking responsibility for a decision that proved disastrous. “In terms of the outcome relative to the decision made, it’s fair to say that we effectively handed a free pit stop to a fast rival.”

The reasoning behind the choice was to avoid traffic after the pit stop, but the fact that “all other teams had a different approach” turned the decision into a critical error. The immediate effect was severe: Piastri, who, according to Andrea Stella, “was in control of the race and deserved to win it,” found himself cut out of contention, while Norris lost a podium position.

Going deeper than procedures

The team principal also revealed that the internal review will go beyond operational procedures to examine psychological dynamics that may have influenced the group. “We need to evaluate whether there was a certain bias in the way we were thinking. Sometimes there are objective reasons; other times a bias creeps in and guides thought.” McLaren wants to understand how a combination of small factors, perhaps underestimated, led to the assumption that not all cars would pit under the Safety Car.

Andrea Stella promised a “constructive and analytical” review, emphasizing that it will not be a hunt for culprits but an effort to prevent similar errors in the future, especially in a season finale where Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri remain fully engaged in a championship battle that will only be decided in Abu Dhabi.

With only one race left and the drivers’ crown still up for grabs, McLaren know they cannot afford another strategic misstep of this magnitude under the Yas Marina lights.
