Andrea Stella has analyzed the first-lap contact between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the Singapore Grand Prix, explaining why McLaren chose not to intervene. McLaren secured the Constructors’ Championship for the second consecutive year after a season of near-total dominance. At Singapore, sparks flew between the two teammates following the first-lap incident. Piastri, the Australian driver, was visibly frustrated on the team radio after his teammate’s move. Andrea Stella has sought to clarify the team’s internal perspective on the situation.
Team dynamics and previous incidents
Just two races ago at Monza, we saw position swaps following a slow pit stop for the British driver. On that occasion, the team decided not to intervene, as it often has in the past. The main reason, according to McLaren, is that Lando Norris would have needed to avoid Max Verstappen before engaging with Oscar Piastri.
The team principal’s analysis
Andrea Stella spoke to the media after the Singapore GP about the contact between Norris and Piastri: “I think the first-lap situation is one of those things that can happen in a tightly contested race. We will evaluate the situation together with our drivers,” the Italian stated, as reported by PlanetF1.
The McLaren team principal also commented on Oscar Piastri’s reaction to the incident: “Obviously, Oscar made some statements while in the car, but this is exactly the kind of character we want from our drivers. They need to make their position very clear. That is what we ask of them.”
Team management decision
In this instance, the pit wall decided not to intervene between the two drivers, allowing Lando Norris to retain the position he had gained: “Well, of course, it is within the team’s authority and right to act if necessary. There was a pit wall evaluation, and we decided that intervention was not required.”
“Regarding the contact between our two drivers, this actually resulted from another racing situation involving Lando and Verstappen,” Stella added. “Certainly, given that contact occurred, this will lead to a review and constructive conversations. But for now, we felt that this contact was more the outcome of another race situation, so to speak.”
