Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris head to the Baku Grand Prix ready to reignite McLaren’s internal title battle
After the post-Italian Grand Prix break, Formula 1 returns to Baku for the 17th round of the season, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris set to reignite the internal McLaren battle for the championship. This internal rivalry is the last flame keeping fans and insiders engaged since it became clear that McLaren could dominate the title fight.
With eight races remaining, Piastri arrives with a 31-point lead and fresh memories of his 2024 victory at this track. The Azerbaijani street circuit, known for its technical and unpredictable nature, could prove decisive. With Pirelli’s softest compounds in play and a likely one-stop strategy, every detail will be crucial in writing the next chapter of the “papaya” title battle.
Every point counts in the championship fight
During the weekend presentation, Oscar Piastri didn’t hide his excitement about returning to Baku: “I have very fond memories of last year,” he admitted. “I consider it one of my favorite races, and it’s always an advantage to return to a track where you’ve achieved a great result.”
The Australian driver also stated that his sole goal this season is to win again in Azerbaijan, a result that would bring him even closer to a potential Drivers’ Championship. “My only objective is to achieve the same result this weekend. I’m leading the Drivers’ Championship and I’m very happy with my driving,” Oscar Piastri added.
Norris ready to fight back
At the other side of the McLaren garage, Lando Norris faces the challenge of reducing the gap that widened after his retirement in the Netherlands and was only slightly reduced with his second-place finish in Italy behind Max Verstappen. “I’m excited to race again this weekend in Baku. Street circuits present different challenges, and I can’t wait to get on track and test myself. I’ve returned to the McLaren Technology Centre and I’m working hard to be in the best possible position to claim another victory,” Norris said.
With both McLaren drivers highly motivated, the Baku Grand Prix promises to deliver a thrilling showdown. Every corner, every wall, and every point could prove decisive in the final stages of the championship fight.
